i work in a small office and do most of the buying (thanks hot deals) for the office and whenever a damn telemarketer calls, it gets sent to me. i have line that i say to all telemarketers trying to sell me something "we are a paperless office". that shut s them up quick.

but, recently on caught me off guard. we have a really old xerox copy machine, this thing is ancient, and it is still serviced by xerox. we get all the toner, drum and supplies from them. some guy called me and said you guys were scheduled for a shipment and he needed my authorization to send it, me thinking that no one in their right mind would know what kind of copier we have, down to the ancient model number, approved it and he said the delivery guy is going to call back later and confirm this information. i said ok.

i was busy that day and didn't think anything of it, until about two hours later some guy calls to say he wanted to set up the shipment and that they tape record all their conversations. that startled me a little. so then i put the guy on hold, went and talked to the office manager, and she told me that xerox never calls, every three months or so we just get a package from them. i walk to the copy room, and sitting next to the copy machine is a brand new toner/drum kit.

i tell the office manager this and she says it is some scam and she will take care of it.......

damn these scam artists are getting slick.....a couple more minutes and I would have been the proud owner of s**t.

/end rant

They're called "toner bandits", and the scam is right up there with the two guys in the white van selling speakers.

Sometimes all you have to do to get them to hang up is ask "Who did you say you were calling from again?". I hate those guys.

EDIT: Oh, and I almost forgot. The last time one of them called me, he was selling printer stuff, so I told him that my office didn't have any printers. He asked what people did when they needed to print something, so I told him that users were instructed to set their monitors face-down on the copier.

Had that happen to a place I was working at a few years ago. My boss didn't realize it was one of those office supply pirates. These guys were stupid though and didn't get payment up front. So I called them up and bargained them down to what we could get toner cartridges for regularly. :p

LOL!

Yes, this is a pretty sleazy scam. It usually is a two-step process, first they call the receptionist asking to "verify" the copier information. Then, using the information (often including the exact model & serial number) they impersonate whoever is really servicing your copier. Scum.

and from what my sec. tells me it is not the first time somebody was asking about our copy machine. all you have to ask them is what company they work for, and that should be the end of it. i don't believe i fell for it.

everytime our office needs to copy or print something, we just fax it to the competitor with instructions on how to mail it back to us. we dont have a toner pirate problem but we do have problems with retaining IT
