So about 30 min. ago on my way home from work, I am driving home with very few other cars on the road (about as empty as you get in LA)

anyway I was driving about 35-40 MPH, speed limit is 35 i am pretty sure...as I about 50 yards* from an intersection with a green light in my direction and I am on the bigger of the two streets. I also saw the light turn green so I knew it wasnt about to turn yellow...well just then a cop pulls out of the street to the right and makes a left turn against a red light without putting on his lights.

I had to hit my brakes hard enough to skid briefly (not hard enough to come to a complete stop). I hit my slowed from hitting the brakes at about the start of the intersection...

The cop didnt even look in my direction even though my car and a car in the lane on my left and slightly behind me both had to hit the brakes pretty hard.

Diagram is here- http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/MrDingledangle/stupid_LAPD.jpg

if i hadnt been paying clost attention there was a good chance i wouldnt have been able to slow fast enough and hit his car

*50 could be anywhere between 25-60

Should have been like James Bond and fired rockets from the sides of your vehicle to blow him away.

So can a cop pull over and ticket another cop if he genuinely made a traffic violation and wasn't doing anything other than normal patrol (but making a traffic violation).

They can - but they don't. "Professional courtesy"

Just like it's technically illegal for firetrucks and ambulances to go more than +10 on the limit, but who the fsck is going to pull them over when they're doing +30?

I wonder if there's ever been a cop who's given himself a ticket, just because he felt so passionately about his job and his duty to uphold protocol.

Well, Officer Speed around here (that's his REAL name) is one righteous mofo, he ticketed his own mother on christmas eve for 1 over the limit AND SHOWED UP IN COURT WHEN SHE CONTESTED IT (I'm not fscking kidding) and any cop would do that, it's him. But nope, he's the most reckless motherfscker I've ever had the displeasure of meeting at a 4-way stop (in his civilian car). He did a POWERSLIDE around the corner - if there had been a car sitting across from me, he would've slammed right into it.

Holy sh!t :Q That sounds like a bio for the cop driver in the Twisted Metal games.

"Who you gonna be? I'm gonna be Sweet Tooth!"
"Fsck that, I'm gonna be Officer Speed!"

Its like when you watch a cop movie and the is speeding from one place to another to stop something and has to cut through traffic and you see all the people stopping fast.

If only every person had to let it all out by whining on a message board :)

Similar thing happened to the kid next door. He is super smart in school, but real 'innocent' in life and recently got his license. He was at a stop sign and slowly went thru the intersection and got T-Boned by a cop who came out of no where really fast. He was off duty, had no emergency lights on and Totalled the kids car. He then pulled the kid out of the car and was yelling at him until the kid actually was questioning himself on whether he came to a full stop at the stop sign.

Knowing the town, and knowing the cop... everyone believes the kid was not at fauly. Pr*ck cop.. bully who thinks his badge is a 'free skate for life' card. And the kid is 17yrs old and totally innocent. So, the kid is screwed.

If the cop "came out of nowhere real fast" then the kid probably wasn't looking long enough or hard enough. Unless this is a blind intersection, in which case the kid should've exercised even more caution.

Regardless, the cop was still a dick for chewing a kid out that badly after a major accident.

I dunno, the cops around here are fine. Shame most of you have a skewed perception of police officers from the few bad ones in your area.

Pretty sure it's illegal for them to go over the limit at all, but you're right, they don't get pulled over. They just get fired after the supervisors find out.

If it's an emergency situation, they are ALLOWED to go over the speed limit so long as they don't infere with traffic or cause an accident. Same thing with running red lights and stop signs. Actually, they are also suppose to honk their horns, in addition to the sirens, before runnin a stop light or stop sign. If they cause an accident it is THEIR fault by federal law now. That was inacted a few years back because of prick cops.

Cops and emergency personel are not above the law. The law states they CAN go above posted speed limits, and ignore other posted road rules so long as they aren't endagering anyone bystanders. However, if there isn't a lawful need to break the normal road rules, then doing so is against the law for them too. You CAN report behavior such as this as well.
