Damn, can't believe I just ordered two EVGA 6800 GT PCI-E

I got these for $379.99 each, about $40 cheaper than Newegg......so I decided to order two, and use my new SLI motherboard!!!

I could've got the Ultra's, but they were $479 each, (still $100 cheaper than newegg) but they take alot more power and generate alot more heat....)

Anyone got SLI 6800 GTs wanna comment about how they run? I've seen tons of reviews, but wanna hear first hand....

🙂 😀

Oh baby...... 🙂 I can't hardly wait!

UPDATED: TEST INFO

Setup:

Setup was very easy, basically plug the damn things in and you are good to go. Once in Windows, the Nvidia Software detects the SLI and tells you to click here to turn it on, and reboot...

3DMark Results

Using Stock 66.93 drivers from nvidia's website my results were:

3D Mark 2003: 18640

3D Mark 2005: 8600

This is on a AMD 3500+ running at stock 2.2ghz, and Video cards running at 350/1000 = Stock

GAMES

I initially had a lot of trouble running games. The screen was all giggly and messed up, I did some research, and found that DVI-D just isn't ready for primetime yet.

After installing the VGA converter and plugging into my 20inch Dell VGA input, everything was excellent.....

I had NO issues running at 1680x1050 (20inch Wide LCD) with 6x AA and 16x AF in Half Life 2..

The effects and graphics were absolutely STUNNING........

Concerns....

Nvidia's drivers suck ass right now.....hopefully they will get their **** together and make a quality driver release that supports SLI

The overall design of the SLI setup puts alot of extra heat on the 2nd card......my temps averaged 3-8 degree's higher on the 2nd card..........

Note: I never reached above 70c on either card while playing games or 3dMark Tests......well below the 135c cutoff

Conclusions

For $760.....(my cost on dual EVGA 6800 GT PCI-E) I feel this is a worth investment for the avid to hard core gamer.

It gives me MORE time to enjoy future games without having to upgrade my Video Solution anytime soon.

The quality of the EVGA cards along with the 2 year warranty, makes me feel confident in my purchase.....

Along with the extra cool factor.......SLI seems to me, to be a fun and worthy purchase for any hardcore gamer.

Sounds good to me dude, I have had no troubles with my 6600GT SLI, but so far can only dream of the sacred land you are headed for. 😉

I got them direct from the company........because they are partnered with the company I work for.....

Here is the setup I will have:

[*]AMD64 3500+ Winchester running at 2.4-2.5ghz
[*]1gig of Ballistic LED Ram
[*]Dual 6800 GT PCI-E EVGA
[*]ThermalRight Xp-90 Cooler
[*]Raptop 74gig
[*]SoundBlaster Audigy Probably...
[*]Dual Dell 2005 FPW 20inch Monitors

Very nice. We have a similar setup (2x6800Gt, 3500+ etc). Must say I love my system at least.. The new (not official) nvidia drivers (71.83 and up) have added support for a LOT more games too.

Have fun!

P.S - you wont be able to use those two monitors in SLI mode unfort :-(

You can't do dual mon in SLI???

Well, Dell might upgrade my 20inch to a 24 inch when it's released in a couple weeks.....so I can always use the 2nd monitor for something else.

Jon

I have almost the same setup as you and I love it. I'm still trying to figure out some of the bugs, but they are minimal. Which board did you go with?

Can you (or anyone) try Tribes: VE for me, and see if it benefits from SLI? There are demos out for it, try the latest, the online demo if you could. Ive asked several people.. nobody has given me an answer. Its based on the UT2003 engine. Ill be nabbing a 2405FPW (replacing my 2005FPW) when in a few weeks, and Im afraid my single card solution may not handle that game, or others with details cranked up.

Dude, I'm green! I wish I'd held out for the SLI stuff (I just built my system), but with an AGP 6800 Ultra I should be happy for awhile (I was stupid enough to buy a 6800 generic AGP). I think I'll wait a year at least for the next-generation of SLI cards to emerge.... but I will NEVER buy anywhere except online again!

What's this you say about Dell upgrading you to a 24"? I just bought my Dell LCD too! OK, give us the details. 🙂~

Because the company I work for is a partner for dell, and I'm not happy with the Dell I have, they might upgrade me to a 24inch when it comes out....

Don't know yet, I'll update when I find out

Even if it doesnt support it natively, you can set it up manually in the drivers in under 2 minutes.

Congratulations. You'll get some mighty heavy synthetic benchmark results 🙂 And in the future, very nice ingame FPS as well.

He'll get 30-90% in game performance increases the day he takes it out of the box.

Congrats. Have fun now dont just "play" 3dMark.

Also where did you hear that the Ultra draws a lot more power than the GT. It draws barely any more and that is due to the higher clock speed.

The reason the 6800's require 2x molex connectors is because they draw almost no power from the AGP/PCI-E connector on the motherboard, hence they need an external connector (ie Molex).

The Ultra consumes very little more power than the GT as they are the EXACT same chip.

What Gamingphreek said.

The Ultras look very hungry with their dual power connectors and the fat board but they don't actually consume that much more than the GT.

In a way the GT is just the economy version of the Ultra tied down just enough to fit the cheaper base.

I know you can force it, but that doesnt seem to always work. Depending on which type it is, can give you graphical errors. At least thats what Hard said when doing that Gigabyte 2n1 card. Just curious if it works good or not.

Either way...

the SLI performance different between the ultra and GT is about 10%, but the cost difference is nearly 25%....

personally, I'd rather take the $200+ and put it towards a nice sound card or Dual Raptors

You meant after he learns to manually edit the config files, right? That's not exactly "out of the box".

Actually I was talking about how about any game that can actually make some use of this is probably in the profiles already.

Contrary to FUD mongering, even one 6600GT can run Quake2 very fast. They're adding many, many profiles every month VL- that is "out of the box". 😉

IMO there is no reason to not like SLI, period.
It gives you non paralleled flexibility and power, no one else offers anything comparable. Last I looked at Pricewatch, 6800Us were down to $535.. Who in their right mind would pay $485 for a similarly performing X850 XT when the additional $50 would get them the SM3 feature set and the ability to upgrade down the road and get another years use out of their original card?

I'm building this system especially for Battlefield 2....

That game will be a serious resource hog and I need to run at 1680x1050 on my LCDs

SO SLI is a must!
