When I deleted my account, I think I had ~11k karma. My rough eyeball estimate was two per post average. I was mostly in tech stuff, and not the "fun" sections. I tried to use it like a forum, but reddit is a shitty forum. same with lemmy. The only good thing about the concept is it's low effort/skill to setup. It's like minimum viable product to get a forum going.

I started on Reddit on the FIRE subs (Financial Independence/Retire Early). Started to check them out and took some of the lessons there. Then realized I have enough to retire so now have time to scroll Reddit. Don’t really go to the FIRE subs anymore, people there annoy me now. There are so many negative rabbit holes there, trying to get the algorithms to just give me positive feeds.

ATF is like a nice warm blanket, but its slow and its the same 15 octogenarians posting on everything around here, which is nice from a community perspective but crap from a "diversity of topics and viewpoints" perspective.

Dang, I just realized I officially created my ATOT account 20 years ago. I was a wee college boy back then!

I spent most of my life without reddit, and I can spend the rest of my life without it. For general nonsense to scroll through, I look at lemmy. If there's something I really want to comment on, I can do it through mastodon, but I'm not usually inclined to comment. The reddit style voting system is shit, and fundamentally broken. It sucked in reddit, and it sucks in lemmy.
It took me a while to realize but recently did that clicking the up-arrow at reddit accomplishes pretty much nothing, it just gets posts out of order, so what's the point. It's kind of a messed up system, but some things, some posts really do work. I created a thread the other day and I got infuriated because it wouldn't let me post. It insisted on "flair" but neither of the two flair choices I was given would work and neither applied to me in any case. I had to just give up, nothing worked. Next day I tried the same post and was again required to add flair to the post but there were 4 choices and one made sense [ ] Discussion. And it posted.

It's hot garbage. In lengthy technical threads you can't even keep track of what's going on. Let's say you view a thread with 120 comments, and you read every post, but are interested in more info. You close it, and come back to find there's now 124 comments. Where's the four comments? Who the fuck knows?! You can't sort in any way to find them because they might be replies to some other comment. Maybe they're collapsed under the [Click to load more] cause fuck you.

Every single fucking thread is effectively it's own forum with unlimited subforums, and zero organization. That might work for mindless bullshit where nobody's saying anything important, and every comment is effectively a "me too", but it's useless for anything important. I'm getting pissed off just thinking about it.

Spend a lot of time there as there is a lot of info. But it's frustrating wading through all the would-be comedians making off topic "jokes" to get to the meat.

I hate social media in general for this. Facebook is the absolute worse. They only show like 10 comments at a time and you have to keep clicking and clicking just to view more, and it's like 1-2 at a time that show up. If someone replies to your comment, good luck trying to even find that reply. It seems they really design this stuff for short term conversations, you can't really have an ongoing conversation going on. It's sad that forums have died out as they are much better.

Remember the 1990s? There was "Read it", "Stumble Upon" and "News Grounds"....and "Slash Dot".

I wonder what ever happened to them?

And TBH I rarely visit Read It if I can help it. Not registered either.

There are about 10 old time crap-posters and 400 edgy bots on Slashdot. They've also gone nuts with terrible ads.

I remember when it used to be super prestigious to have your content "slashdotted" and it usually involved your server going down due to all the traffic. I guess it probably wouldn't be a big deal now days. Never had my content end up on there but I did have a small piece of software make it on MSN's home page once. That was fun. My free Tripod hosting plan didn't see that coming.

Reddit is the digital manifestation of ADHD.

I re-sort comments after an initial scan of the discussion. To see those 4 new comments sort by newest, it somewhat works in the subs I frequent. Attempting to read a conversation with anything approaching good flow is nigh impossible though.

Well. Looks like reddit blocked all my alt accounts too.
I lurk and rarely post. Redditor is a bad word in my son's circles. You must be starved for interaction to give a shit about interacting with the unwashed masses.

Aaaannnnddds I've been permanently banned from Reddit for "promoting violence" apparently (on the Star Trek sub of all places).

Ofc I cannot actually see the message I posted, and I don't remember what it was and so I cannot properly dispute the ban.

I have a couple alt accounts I can always use but I think it's the universe telling me to drop reddit for a while again. So that was an interesting couple months, but I'll be glad to be rid of it once again.

That is the weirdest thing ever. Take the Klingons for example. They are a warrior race whose primary way of life is based on violence. How in the world are you to express yourself or even quote from the damn show with "promoting violence"? Thats just stupid.

Wrong. Reddit is the pinnacle of advancement of mankind from Roman bathhouses as the centres of discussion and thought. Even better, you have credible "inside information" for fields one might never could experience all in one life, dumped for all to see(if not deleted). We don't even need to see each other and shared poop cleaning sticks to have unfiltered conversations online.

"unfiltered"... in a thread created by someone who was banned :p
I've definitely seen a lot of deleted posts. Unfiltered my arse.

Yes Reddit is a bad format and a cesspool of BS. Then you run across something good.

This dude is an astronaut posting from the ISS

My expectation of Reddit is that that post will be swamped by flatearthers and people telling the actual astronaut that he's wrong and that they saw something on YouTube that proves it!
Apparently all we need to do is take them to Antarctica and some of them will be convinced! The other ones, well... maybe they oversleep and miss the return trip😏

Wait. So if I just pretend to be a flat earther I get a free holiday to see the penguins in Antarctica?!
