I have always known that AOL sucked. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to get my 69 year old parents and my 79 year old uncle off of it.

Every time one of their computers craps out, I have a hell of a time getting their e-mail, addressbook and favorites transferred to the new machine.

And now, apparently, there is NO WAY to import such things from the AOL program into AOL Desktop. Wat?!?!

Now, my uncles computer died and he got, from a friend, a 2001 iBook. I have not owned a Mac since OS 7. Trying to convert WinXP AOL to Mac AOL is just too much for me to handle.

I have set him up with Mail (POPing into AOL), iChat and Safari (with AOL as the home page). Hopefully, the explanation that Mac AOL does thing differently will appease him, since the whole computer will be a new experience for him. Once he is use to using those programs, I may be able to get him off of AOL altogether.

Why can't AOL make it easier to move saved mail, addresses and favorites from one computer to another?

EDIT:

I managed to create a .pfc file with all the old e-mails. Then I used a program called "Goodbye A*L" to extract all the e-mails from the .pfc files. Now I have each e-mail in a .eml file.

Does anyone know how to import .eml files into the Mail program on the Mac?

The thing is, even if you get past the usability and maturity issues on AOL, the fact that you have to move heaven and earth to back anything up is just ridiculous.

Not sure what they do now, but years ago, techs used a little known secret formula to get rid of AOL on a hard drive, it was called, reformatting.

I just had a PC in with AOL 9 Security Edition installed and it was so SLOW even when hooked up to DSL. Also AOL 9 S E would not install anything other than flash version 9.

i loved AOL.

had I pressured my parents to buy stock in them like I wanted back when I used it, approx 16 years ago, I'd love it even more.

But AOL in the present? Should just be sucked up by google already

There is very little hope for AOL users. I built my Sister a new comp a few years ago, set up her DSL internet and showed her how to use IE and Firefox. It went well for a bit, then I was over to her house a couple months later and seen where she had relapsed and reinstalled AOL. :(

Is there a cure?

Oh God, I remember back in the day when some people I knew would laugh hysterically while "punting" people off of AOL.

This was back in the days of slow dialup...

eml is a pretty standard mail type. It's also plaintext, you more than likely can just rename the extension and see if it's recognized by the new email client.

A mac forum would be your best bet, macs are in a very big minority everywhere else.
