Maybe, but it killed a lot of birds that ate the bugs that ate the stuff before hand.

I was going to post that you only use this stuff out of doors.

Inside most of the poisons used are Pyrthrins(sp?) which are made from a certain chrysanthemum seed.

I did have real good luck with one of the many bait traps(not Combat) I used last year. I wish I could tell which brand was the one that did the trick.

If we are talking about Carpenter Ants then the reason they are coming inside is because they either want more soggy wood to eat or they need a source of water(drops in the sink).

Baits and poisons should be used that are specific to the thing you want to kill.

To add insult about 50% of the ones in the garage are of the winged variety. And that is just wrong.
Hey, we're getting the HUGE black ants too! I'm near Cleveland...
Michigan here. They hella blow.

This is what I use for any type of trouble insects. It does a fantastic job. Just do it about 1 every other month. Spray it out around you house and you won't see sh1t for weeks. I also put out some granualures in the yard to keep ticks and such away also.

Are you talking about the demon WP or the dust mentioned up above?

It's a powder that you mix 1 or 2 scoops per gallon of water, depending on the strength you want to use. Then just spray thru a spayer. They say you can use it indoors, but I haven't as doing it outside seems to keep the bugs from getting inside.

Pesticides anger me.

Why would you want to kill all the insect life around your house? There are very few that are truely troublesom.. termintes.. SOME ants..

Most are beneficial.

The thing that's worked for me is "Terro" liquid bait.

The first time I used it was when I bought a 1970 Buick LeSabre for $50. The thing hadn't been driven for over a year and had lots of ants living in it.
A few Terro baits later and BINGO... no more ant farm! :)

BTW, I changed all the fluids in the car, fixed the dropped down rear window, tuned it up and it was one of the best cars I'd ever owned. Until the old lady in the Caddy ran that red light. :(

:( R.I.P. Old Buick... How I loved thee :(

Just got back from Home Depot. They've banned diazinon here in NY and the guy said most states down the east coast as well. I had to settle for Ortho's replacement product for it - BUG-B-GON with some other chemical.

Yes, this stuff works great. I just used some on my house last week. My housemates and I had a huge nest in the attic. It had drones and everything. A few days later, no ants.

This Terro stuff sounds very effective (from the descriptive user comments on their site)... I'll even try this. One thing though - seeing the infestation toward the bait when they come take the liquid drop, isn't that a concern if you're baiting indoors ? People were saying there were lines and lines of ants coming for the goodies. I'd hate to see 50-100 black ants come into my kitchen.

Place the Terro baits were the ants are entering the kitchen or where you think they might be. "Bait it and they will come". :)

I perfer the powder stuff (raid, etc.), just make a line of it along the walls and where the problems are and the ants will not get close to it.

Wasn't that stuff banned?

available till the end of this year:

December 5, 2000
EPA sharply restricts consumer use of diazinon, nation's #2 selling home and garden insecticide
Diazinon called unsafe for home use but will remain on store shelves for at least another three years.
Both diazinon and Dursban are organophosphates, nerve gas derivatives originally developed during World War II.

Week back we found little black ants eating the cat food. I bought ortho traps but from what i could tell the ants didn't give a damn about them.

Recently found cat vomit on the carpet. Ants eating it. Found ants in foodbowl. Vacuumed and are now using Raid (I think) traps. Ants haven't shown up in a couple of days but I've been monitoring the traps and am not seeing much activity. I'm dissapointed in the anti-ant measures available here in the two stores I've tried.

In Canada we always had these ant drops in these little yellow containers. Squeeze a few on and the ants would eat it like candy and shortly die and kill their queen. These traps are supposed to do the same thing but I'm not convinced (and these traps are waaaay more expensive). I want to procure some of this stuff from Canada if it's still available/legal but I'll try those Terro traps in the meantime if I have to.

EDIT: Ah that terro seems to have a liquid form (not in traps only). Probably does the same thing. Sweet.

Diazinon is in the same family chemically as sarin and tabun so I'm not surprised it's been restricted or banned by the EPA.

there's lots of things to try.

for the cat food, we put a chalk circle around the bowl. ants dont like powdery lines for some reason, they won't go past this line. however, you'll need to do this about once a week.

you can also use anything that has aspartame (like equal, or nutrasweet...i dont think sweet and low works), it works well. if the ants dont eat the aspartame you can mix it with a little fruit juice and leave it out for them.

another thing is the borax solution that someone else mentioned above. it's also great for getting rid of fleas in carpet.

Ugh, I know how you feel. The ants have started to find their way into our house again in the last couple of days. So annoying.
