As title says?

It's ludicrous how long (or short) they last! :| :| :|

My wife has a nice Kitchen Aid mixer in the Galley. They make a can opener attachment for it. I'm gonna try one of those.

The same can be said about toasters. The control slider should be a toggle switch labeled warm and ablated. There is no middle position! :|

go to your local Army/Navy store, pick up some surplus ones there. They're 5 cents each at mine, the stupid things work until you lose them. (That happens a lot, theyre really little).

Tried them along with GE Spacemaker, Sunbeam, and various other junk. They all fail; some in as little as a month's time! Even the hand can openers become useless after a [relatively short] period of time. We actually had some kind of can cutter that cut the top off without sharp edges and that lasted the longest. It could also be these funky Food Lion cans. I dunno. There has to be an industrial strength opener out there! :)

I tried that once and it reminded me of how I had to get an oil filter off that was too tight for any wrench. At least it wasn't as messy!

Not an electric one, they're all crap.

There is a company called "Swing-A-Way" Manufacturing that has made sturdy hand-crank type can openers for like 40 years. I think Walmart sells them for around $12.00. They come with a 5 year guarantee.

Just clean them occassionally and lubricate the gears with a food-grade grease. It will be the last can opener you buy for 10 years....or more.

I've used a manual one, "good grips" for several years now.


It's held up fine.

That's not the problem! I have no problem with a hand powered can opener! Problem is I cannot get one that will LAST! The last one bent when I squeezed it! It was cast metal and quite heavy but just proved incapable to doing the job. :|

Bought an Oxo manual can opener a few years ago, after a similar experience, it works very well & has outlasted all the electrics I've ever owned, and we throw it in the dishwasher frequently so it's always clean.

since we're talking about manual kitchen wares, this is the best juicer you'll ever buy. And I swear it's so solidly made it'll last 20 years.

At the end of the compression it "locks" into place and smooshes the crap out of what's inside. Excellent for orange and Grapefruit juice. Beats a Juiceman jr hands down.

Along with can openers, wtf is wrong with bottle openers? I was trying to puncture my damn chicken broth to make soup for the woman (sick, I know, she still shoulda made her own soup) and I fuggen bend the damn thing like 15 degrees. I continued to 90 degrees and chucked it at the door.

I find that the old school all metal/ghetto looking ones work best. All these new nifty plastic thingamajigs suck.

Pampered Chef has an awsome can opener. have had ours for 3 years and it still works like day one.

We have a manual can opener that my mom and dad probably received as a wedding gift about 25 years ago. I've never used an electric can opener. :p
