DAMMIT! I just found out my commuting costs are not deductable

Jesus Christ. Thank God I live out in BFE and don't have to worry about getting ass raped for the right to travel over public roadways that I've already payed for with my taxes. Sorry to hear that man.

I thought the $5 toll on the Golden Gate bridge (southbound only) was bad. I hope all you CA peeps voted against raising bridge tolls. 😉

Take some educational classes and/or get a part time job in the same area. That will allow you to claim half of the transportation costs as deductible expenses.

Or move closer to the shore and commute in by water.

That's why I love working for Unka Sam. He paid for me to take public transportation to and from work every day (actual drive time for me per day: 25 minutes) for the last two summers (and continues to pay for my mom even now). My friend (who doesn't work for the government) only gets that money untaxed.

Yep same here. All of my transportation costs are covered by my job. I end up paying nothing.

You've got to get on mass transit. Even the guy in the Maserti that parks next to me takes the train.

My parking pass as the train station in Connecticut is $200 a year and my Metro-North + Unlimited Monthly MetroCard is $275 a month. I figure it costs me approximately $5000 a year to commute before taxes. I really don't have a choice, but I'm looking forward to the day I can find a job in Connecticut or Westchester. Even working for the same salary would be like a $5k bump.

And that is the killer right there, because I recently got a job offer about 5 minutes from my apartment. They're actually paying me more than I make now, plus no commuting costs. However, the company I work for now is a really big, well established firm with an opportunity to move up, while the other one is a new and unproven company that can go belly up in six months for all I know.

I voted to double (even triple) it 😉

I've been doing this for nine months now. It's NJ to NY, I pay 8 bucks for the Verazanno Bridge, 6 bucks for the Outerbridge or Geothals bridge, 1 buck for the Garden State Parkway, 1 buck for the NJ Turnpike, and $10 gas.

10 bucks in gas A DAY? DO you drive a freakin big rig??

is it possible for u to move closer to ur job? seems like you're paying about $900 a month for commute. for a 1000 u can share an apt in NYC...plus less commute time.

Yeah, because it's exactly the same thing.

i thought you were trying to say that it's just as applicable for deductions... and as someone else pointed out, my sarcasm meter is broken today. 🙂

My ex is a real estate agent, but she works for a new home developer and she goes to the same place each day. That's not deductable either, only if you go to different locations all the time like a "reseller" agent does. (ex had a fit when I tried to explain it to her)
