Dammit... do computer monitors just die by themselves?

Left for work this morning. Monitor fine.

Come home tonight. Monitor has power, but just one big black screen. Old monitor works, so it's not the computer. Called Samsung and apparently warranty is gone but they're happy to take a look for $150, which is what a new monitor is going to cost anyway.

Why the fuck does a monitor just decide it's time to die? And why does this monitor, which is about 4 years older than that one, refuse to die?

I guess the point of this email is Viewsonic > Samsung > Jeeebus.

I fixed a Samsung 225bw by replacing a few capacitors. Yes. LCD monitors with bad formula caps do "just die for no reason."

Yeah. Open it up and see if the capacitors are bulging. If so, you can almost certainly fix it with a soldering iron, a bit of solder, and less than $10 worth of replacement capacitors.

According to the American Bar Association, you're a doctor. Take a crack at it. It sounds like you just shouldn't use a circular saw, but we can work around that for this job.
 
I miss CRTs for their dramatic deaths. LCD deaths are not as fun. Sadly I've never experienced a CRT death myself, only heard of others' stories. Usually involves lot of sparks and smoke and funny electricity sounds. 😛
 
Get good quality, proper spec replacement caps (panasonic FM or FC series, Nichicon HM/HN/HZ, etc) a soldering iron, and go to town. I recap LCD monitors all the time that I find thrown out. I have 4 monitors waiting for a recap right now actually.

I've ironed clothes before. Other than that type of iron, I have no idea what you people are talking about.

google for that model specific fix. I fixed my Samsung 204B by following instructions and replacing some caps. The hardest part was opening it up without ruining the bezel. soldering the old caps off and the new ones on were easy enough
 
I had an IBM Aptiva which at the time I took great pride in owning... top of the line type stuff. Then one day the monitor decides to take a crap and the whole unit didn't look whole anymore. That was such a sad time.
 
btw, I don't suppose a similar fix can be made for this issue:

It's gotten a lot worse over time - not impact damage.

you talking about that black line in the middle of the panel i am assuming?

Typically if a board goes you will get that line across the entire screen. To me, that looks like the panel is bad...
Its cheaper to buy a new tv
