Damaging the P3 with FOP38 HSF?

I will be recieving a FOP38 HSF soon to use with my p3-700 flip-chip on an Asus CUSL2-C mb. Has anyone had a problem damaging a p3 with this HSF, like has been reported with the T-Bird?

Also, any tips for installing this beast?

Yes, P3 cores crack just like t-bird cores... They're a tad less susceptible to this, but they can too be cracked.


As far as the clip, be careful with it... DOn't force it, and make sure it is resting flat on the chip when you're clipping it in. Don't be worried if you have to "loosen" the clip. It is a very strong(high-pressure) clip, even for socket A use.

If you're not Tarzan, the job needs two people. Person A to hold the HS in place, and force the buckle end down with a small common screwdriver while NOT touching the buckle! Person B latches the buckle. As Mikewarrior2 suggests, make absolutely certain that the HS is flat on top of the CPU before even attempting to latch the non buckle end of the SK7 clip on the S370's lug. Further, make sure that the entire top of the processor is covered by the HS. I cut a line into the top of a lapped Celly with a FOP. Personally, I will not attempt to use this HS on any glass CPU. Paying $10 more for an Alpha is a much better idea!

Once you get over the $45 price tag (*gak* *cough*) you plug it in and watch the temp go down and realize why it costs so much...

Hmm. Now I am wondering if I made the wrong choice. I originally chose the FOP-38 because of the review I read on anandtech. He said both the Alpha and GW clipping mechanism was a pain, but they both cooled about the same and the GW was cheaper or more available.

Should I bend the clip some (remove some of it's strength) before trying to put this thing on my p3?

Also, I am confused about the little rubber feet that goes on the processor. Do these come in the package and do I need to use them on the p3? Thanks.

Take the fan off. It'll make the install much easier. Little rubber feet were included with my Alpha. They help balance the HSF. AMD's have them already on the CPU, Intel's don't. When I installed a FOP on my brother's computer, I didn't really have too much trouble with the blip. Basically, I hooked one side of the clip, pushed the heatsink flat, had my brother kind of push down't on the center while I used a screw driver to latch the other side.
