Dam it, I hate steam.

I was just playing episode 1 yesterday, today when I started it is trying to update something at 93% complete and it says servers are two busy to handle my request. There are no new updates listed.

Why is it doing this, especially since I set it to NOT update the game.
How can I run the game and how can I stop steam from updating or trying to log on.

I know with HL2 there was a way (as for offline computers) to activate the game and configure steam for offline play, how can I do this here.

And how can I play the game again as I did yesterday. The severs are supposedly busy all day, and I just don't believe they will get better anytime soon.

Thanks

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA. Even if you couldn't find a way for HL2 to run in offline mode in Steam, you could always pull out your ethernet cord. XD

Would it work, or would it get stuck trying to connect. And if I don't finish updating and just disconnect, will I be able to play again.
Disabling a perfectly good game for a process that could take who knows how long is just plain stupid.

If it cant find a connection it pops up a message where you can select to play in offline mode, iirc. However, to play offline mode you cant have either Steam or the individual game in the middle of an update.

linky

same support page has a couple of pages on stalled downloads but dunno if much use. e.g.

Thanks, the troubleshooting did not help. I think it never downloaded anything and is stuck at 93% because it can't find a free server. Is that were your download started or somewhere else.

Did all of you complete the update just fine or do you play without updates.

Can any of you download other games? Maybe if I backup my files and try re downloading it might work.

Thanks again.

Well, finally updated.

I am running in offline mode if I use it.
Just wondering, if I back up my entire steam folder to a DVD, would restoring it make it playable in offline mode, even if an update is needed online.
Basically, is update information stored anywhere other then the Steam folder.

I certainly don't want to loose the game again.

Thanks again
