Dallas cops shoot mentally ill man who was complying

Apparently the man was a mentally ill schizophrenic and his mother called 911 asking for training EMT or police to help with him, because they just had an argument and he was agitated. You see in the video that he was pacing back and forth outside, and then just sitting in a chair. The police came and approached him and then you see him standing and not moving an inch. Witnesses said the police told him to freeze and he did. But as soon as he stopped moving the police open fired on him hitting him in the stomach.

The video is in the news article: http://gawker.com/dallas-cops-shoot-mentally-ill-man-standing-in-the-stre-1447471140

After watching this video more than once I think the shooting was not justified at all. The police claimed he had a knife (as usual) but his mother and father and neighbors are saying they didn't see a knife.

According to the press release issued by Dallas police Sgt. Warren Mitchell immediately after the shooting, Bennett “made statements indicating that he was not going to cooperate with the officers" and that “the incident escalated which led an officer to fire his weapon upon the individual.”

So saying you you won't cooperate is grounds for shooting now?

wow. the video is damning. the guy was standing frozen when they fired.

Personally I think the mother was dumb, because she said initially in her call for help that she thought her son had a knife, but the father said he didn't see a knife. But the guy is complying, and standing completely still. This is just really poor training in my opinion. Police officers really need to have much more training in how to deal with the mentally ill. Learn how to talk with them. But what I am confused about is, don't they often times use a stun gun if they think a mentally ill person has a weapon? This would have been better if they just stunned the guy once then they could have apprehended him if he was ill.

But then again, with the rate of abuse with stun guns by police I just think the answer is more training, and more accountability.

"Took several steps towards them with a knife raised in an aggressive manner."

That's what the officers say. The video shows differently.

The shooting is bad enough, but without surveillance of them the cover up might have worked. That'd be horrific to get away with it - how many incidents like this don't have video?

When cops are now being constantly caught in their own lies, the more the public distrust them and will lack respect for them. Now there are camera's everywhere. Cops are getting caught on almost a daily basis now in this type behavior and worse.

God damn C average highschool graduates with guns, all of them.

Right 🙄 Every single cop that exists is evil. What other retarded generalizations do you make? A black person robs you, they must all be thieves? Your mexican gardener means all hispanics have a green thumb?

Nonmoving target at close range and he still misses with three of his four shots? Do these guys get any training at all?

I was thinking that too. the guy was not moving. he had his hands down and well "frozen"

and he still missed 3 of the four..

Oh come on, you can clearly see the man walking towards the officers with a knife in his hand. \sarcasm

According to ATOT doing something wrong means the cops can beat you up, shooting people is the next logical step.

Also, this hasn't been the first time cops were called to help out in a situation and the person they're supposed to help ends up dead. Something is wrong with the training of cops somewhere along the line.

Another trigger happy pig.

God bless video cameras. We are going to see more and more pigs caught in their lies as cameras become ever more ubiquitous. I can tell you if this happened at my house I would have it in HD.

We need to have an across the board mandate that cops wear vest cameras at all times while on duty. It will massively decrease the number of cops who descend into full-scale pig category.

Didn't the officer have a taser?

I'd be surprised if he didn't have some kind of less than lethal capability in the form of baton, pepper spray, or Taser. That's where he will lose this case is in his apparent lack of escalation of force continuum from verbal to lethal.

Prosecute for murder.

Well he didn't die, you'd be surprised how many handgun wounds are survivable but something definitely odd about shooting first and asking questions later. I would have at most tasered and hogtied but he was not aggressive towards the cops.

From another article:

Bullets also slammed into a neighbor’s windows. Police evidence tape now covers the spot where the bullets hit.
“Had someone been in that home, they could have been shot as well or maybe killed,” Jackson said.

From another article:
If the internal investigation doesn't get anything I hope that neighbor lodges a criminal trial against the officer in any case. Stupid fucking pig probably missed 3/4 of his shots because the guy was so damn far away.

I kind of blame the mother. What did she expect the cops to do these days? "My schizophrenic son has a knife help!"

well. I'm sure she didn't expect that a batshit insane cop would get all paranoid and shoot him when her son was standing still. Then try to cover it up.

only fucking idiots would blame the mother..
