What marketing wiz came up with this one???

For those who don't get it, think "Mulatto." In fact, their commercial caught my attention because I thought I heard someone say "Mulatto" on TV.

edit:

Google mulatto +degrading, or mulatto +insult, or mullato +derogatory, etc.

A LARGE portion of mixed race folks find the term "mulatto" to be degrading. Even those who do not personally find it offensive recognize the fact that many people do.

Mulatto was derived during the days of slavery. It originates from the Spanish word mulatto which means mule, which is the infertile offspring of a horse and a donkey. Spanish slavers used the word mulatto during the days of slavery to refer to anyone born of an African and another race, specifically Spanish or other European.
Leave it alone until somebody speaks up about it.

If you cant handle the truth dont act all offended.
What are you talking about?!

All this because of an "lol"?

I thought it was funny that I hadn't ever heard this apparently derrogatory term. What the hell is your trip?

You think so? Its a disagreement, but I usually agree with public opinion. But you just watch Eli - he does this to me all the time. Apparently he didnt like the taste of his own medicine. And yes, I do have links.
What the fsck?..... are you talking about?

A disagreement? I never spoke to you, I asked a question to the thread, which was answered.

I do this to you all the time? Do what?!

Ask questions!?

link up, boy.

😕

"boy"? Im leaving this thread now. I didnt realize you were such a racist. :|

god damn you need to pull the stick out of your ass.

he was NOT being racist in this thread at all. but boy did you want to label it on him for it. when people pull the race card for bullcrap it just makes that person look bad.

I think sometimes people look for any reason to yell racist. look at Omerasa for one.bah

anyway.. I never knew of that term. I'm suprised that DQ would run such a commercial. wonder how long it will be on the air?

since when is the word mulatto, racist?

Yeah, I'm 21 and in college and never heard it used as a racist term. I've actually seen it in textbooks and books that were decently "recent."

I didn't know mulatto was racist. I've seen it in history books and a friend of mine described himself as mulatto (due to the fact that his father is black and mother is white). I have never seen anyone take offense to the term. In a college history class I had 2 semesters ago, we had long conversations about the treatment of mulatto and black slaves and the history teacher, who was black, and about 25% of the class, that was at least partially decended from blacks, didn't have a problem with the term.

Mulatto = racist = news to me

I though the racist term was half-breed but I'v heard and used the term Mulatto all my life and have never heard it used in a racist context.

??

"boy" = racist? Ummm, you just might be reading into things a bit much, FelixDeKat.

I said the same exact thing to my gf when we saw the commercial. It's moronic. The only word that moo+latte sounds like is mulatto. It doesn't sound like anything else. Whoever thought that was a good idea for a drink name is a flaming idiot. I don't particulary find mulatto an insulting term, but christ, what were they thinking???

I think I'm going to start making macaroon cookies that are 1/8th chocolate and calling them "octaroons."

Uh oh!

Yeah, I don't use that word because I was politely clued in one day. It's offensive to many because of its roots. The term "mixed" or "mixed-race" works just fine.

I really haven't either, but it's pretty simple when you think about it: Most people just don't realize that it offends other people, and in all likelyhood, they mean no offense at all. It doesn't get the same attention as the "N" word, but folks who know that term "mulatto" was originally used to describe an "inferior" person use different words.

And now you know. 🙂

Say any word right, and it can be considered racist or deragaotry. I'm so tired of everyone wanting to be "PC". :|

Crack
Brown
Dark
Mule
Master
Slave
...

Any of those off the top of my head are racist if I said them in the necessary context. Maybe we need to remove all adjectives from the English language? We'll remove ANY word that may be construed as racist. Keep this crap up and pretty soon we'll sound like cavemen because all we can say is "ug".

Look, I'll say it again, *I* am not the one who will throw a fit. I am merely pointing out what their product's name sounds like. I couldn't give two sh!ts what they call it.

I don't remember where I first came across this term - might've been "Roots" - by Alex Haley, or another novel about blacks and slavery. I distinctly remember that *blacks* were referring to "half-breeds" as mulatto, in a derogatory sense. Obviously, it is a racial term, irrespective of whether someone finds it offensive or not - the DQ ad did catch my ear too, just the same way as Amused described. It's not a shocker, but enough to raise a few eyebrows. The fight between Eli and FelixDeKat was funny, though 😀

Edit sp.

I find frapaccino offensive towards African-Americans because frap = rap.

People these days need to calm down with the "politcally incorrect" or offensive crap. If you have to live your life so narrow-mindedly, go ahead, but don't drag the people who don't care or are alright with it into a political debate. MooLatte and Mulatto are very DISTINGUISABLE words, I don't even care if they wanted their product to resemble the other "bad word".

Lets say I am African American and I start playing Diablo. When I choose a race, I am surprised to find one of the characters is a shady, dark role of the Necromancer. OMFGWTFBBQ!?!? It sounds like "negro". OMFG!! I will now complain and try to sue Vivendi. He's dark, shady, mysterious, raises the dead.... sounds like they're stereotyping "negros" as voodoo specialists called Necromancers.

OMFG LET ME THROW A FIT :|

Not to sound immature, or rather very immature, but SHUT TEH FACE. I don't think DQ is out to get the "mulattos"

And if it was unintentional, people would complain anyways because they're attention whores

Watch it.. Felix might bite your head off.

heh.

No, not Skoorb. He doesnt go into my threads with the "what the fsck are you talking about...blah, blah..". You do however - and if I wanted, I could do that to you all the time, just like you do to me. But I dont. I did this one time to show you what I was talking about. Dont do that to me again or you will pay.
