DETROIT - DaimlerChrysler AG will announce Monday at the Geneva Auto Show it will build a convertible version of its popular PT Cruiser, the company said.

A "styling study" of an open-air PT Cruiser was first shown at last year's New York Auto Show, and public reaction was so positive the automaker decided to build a production version.

"An Internet poll taken immediately after the unveiling show that almost 90 percent loved the vehicle and begged us to build it," said Chrysler Group president and chief executive Dieter Zetsche, in a statement.

Production will begin during the first quarter of 2004 at the Toluca, Mexico-based assembly plant, and the cars will arrive in showrooms soon thereafter, the automaker said. Pricing has not been set. Current models of the PT Cruiser carry base sticker prices from dlrs 16,275-dlrs 22,680.

The convertible PT Cruiser will be a two door, four-seater. The current hardtop has four doors. The rear seat in both versions can be folded down to add cargo space.

The PT Cruiser has been one of the most successful vehicles in the Chrysler Group's lineup since it was introduced two years ago with more than 310,000 sold worldwide according to the automaker.

Specialty versions such as the Flame, Woodie and Dream Cruiser have also been offered in limited numbers in North America and Europe.

uh....what?

<< Its not nearly as hideous as it used to be. >>

Have you seen it with the top up yet? Gotta hand it to them, they took the ugliest car on the road and made it even uglier. That's no small feat.

Lets not confuse the PT cruiser as the ugliest car in the world. The Asstek still holds that title, then the PT cruiser, then the Avalanche, then the prowler... and so on 🙂

What they need to offer more than a convertible version is a version with a lot more torque and power with what those things currently have.

I think they both look quite alright. And if people like them and buy them, why not give them a convertible version?

Yeah, why you all dissing the PT? There's nothing at all radical in its design that would make it ugly. I think it looks pretty nice. You all probably really hate it because it is underpowered. Give it 100 more horsepower and we'll see how many of you still hate it. 🙂

Actually, the GT Cruiser is coming out for '03 which will have the 204HP turbo 4 from the Neon SRT-4. It also has around 220 lb-ft of torque. That should shut up the "no power" brats. As it stands now, the Crusier goes 0-60 in about 8.9 seconds with the 5-speed manual. Not bad for its size if you ask me.
