Daily drive a cayman S?

07's with 30k can be had for $30k.
how reliable are these as a DD?

I drive about 70 miles a day, 15k per year, live in the northeast so we get a couple of major snow storms every winter.

seems like a bad idea, but i'm tempted.

just go for it. even if it turns out to be a PITA whenever youre feeling down you can just go look at it/sit in it. and then of course there are the good traction months... 🙂

Oh and try this...

http://www.rockauto.com/repairindex/

I compared a 07 Cayman S to a 07 Corvette
Parts for the 2007 PORSCHE CAYMAN S 3.4L cost 2.63 times the cost of parts for a 2007 CHEVROLET CORVETTE 6.0L.

Use others cars to get a better idea. Also this has nothing to do with relability, just cost of parts alone. The Corvette will usually be better in that regard as well.

cool link, thx.
looking at corvettes on autotrader and they cost about the same (slightly less) as a cayman from the same year (2007). definitely wasn't expecting that.

i dont know too much on porsches, i know there are some that need a motor pull to do spark plugs. if your doing 15k a year on a one, i hope you know how to turn or a wrench or have many friends who can. Getting these dealership service is not cheap but if you have the pockets to consider buying one, your pockets might be big enough to cover the cost.

Yea my wife wanted a sports car I said Corvette.

She looked at everything under the sun and even asked others who owned Porsches and other sports cars and most said they love "insert their fav fancy car" but for a daily driver the Corvette is it.

She drove it and we have had it about 5-6 years now.

I like the updated Cayman. But I would not want it as my ONLY car. I also was a tech so I do all the work on my cars.

It's a Porsche. You ever hear of an unreliable Porsche?

Just be aware earlier Boxsters and Caymans are known to blow their engine. It's a design flaw Porsche corrected in later models I believe.

Yea thats why I like the UPDATED model. I heard of early issues but not sure what they all were. Never worked on a Boxster/Cayman so my info is mostly other techs and fan sites.

The cayman s is a fantastic car. I'd prefer it over the vette.

I know someone who has owned a corvette (C5 I believe), cayman s, and z4 3.0 and his favorite was the cayman.

A lot of this depends on where you live and what you want.

I actually would imagine the cayman would hold its value better, although right now is a horrible market for cars so you should be able to get a decent deal on either.

Do you live in an highly populated area? If not you better find a good local porsche/german shop before you even start looking for a used cayman

The vette and cayman drive completely different.. I believe carmax has both, so go test them to really decide.

HTF did this guy get banned already?

oh hai guise, still here!
😉

that's why i'm so shocked the cayman S costs around the same as a vette (without knowing their msrp's of course).

It's true, I pass them all the time on the freeway on my motorcycle. A Corvette is no faster than a Prius during the daily commute.

Fair as I know it's a decently reliable vehicle which is also quite fun to drive. The only problem being it's rather small, which may not matter initially but there isn't a whole lot of room inside. As for snow, long as it isn't deep stuff and you buy winter tires for it you'll be fine.

Have you priced tires and insurance?
I have priced the tires and insurance and it is not that expensive. IMHO, most people should be able to afford it. The Cayman/Boxster pleasure use only insurance would cost me $100 less than my daily to/from work Camry.

And the Yokohama performance tires for the Cayman/Boxster costs only $200 more for 4 compare to my Michelin tires for the Camry.

<--- was going to get a Boxster S last fall.

OP go for it, because that is a great price and you can always sell it later if you don't want it.

insurance is really cheap based on the demographics, but do tell what crappy tires you can et in 235/40/18 and 265/40/18 for only $200 more than tires for a camry (which happens to be my daily driver along with a boxster for fun)

18" tires, $200 each? i can handle that.

insurance, haven't priced it out but if it's a couple hundred more a year, that's not too bad either.

i still have an accord which i will be handing down to my gf for hauling people and stuff.

I don't remember what the tires were but Big-O tires claimed that they can get me a set of 4 18" Yokohama for $200 more than the set of 4 16" all season Michelin for the Camry. (4 16" Yokohama tires would be $160 cheaper than 4 16" Michelin)

Paid just over $200 each for the Michelin.

Just remember if you live in a snowy climate you'll need to factor in snow tires there as well. If you put all seasons on that car I'm pretty sure Porsche has the right to take it back from you. 😀

Personally I think you're better off buying a ~$2500 beater ranger/s10 or something.. I mean these cars *can* go in the snow etc but if you're spending $30k+ on a sports coupe you should be able to swing a beater winter vehicle
