that car should have a power button. hold and press the power button down for 3 seconds. if it doesn't have a power button, throw it in neutral.

people still aren't getting that with their computers after almost a decade...you expect them to understand how that works with their car?

i dont know any non-techie person that knows how to turn a computer off by holding the power button. its weird to me everytime, and when i show them they think its a special function to only that model of computer.

When the Vehicle is being driven the shiftier is LOCKED. This is an Automatic transmission. Toyota Camery

My Dad's Camry (no e ;)) lets him slide his shifter into neutral while in motion. Although he's never tried it while pushing the gas :hmm: I should ask him to lightly press the gas pedal then try to shift into neutral and see what happens.

i wont argue, i really dont know. around what year did most cars start shifting electronically?

Even some of the "mechanical" shifted transmissions were electronically controlled and wouldn't always do what you told them to do in some instances. Sure, you moved the lever, which moved the cable, that moved the linkage on the transmission, but it didn't physically make the solenoids operate.

right, but i thought it did physically put the tranny into neutral/park.... like i said though, i grew up working on 90's and earlier cars. and i still own a 99 truck. anything in the last decade i just dont have much experience with.

itll just pop out of gear and the engine will rev up

I wanted to correct something. I was wrong I can shift into neutral while driving, you can shift into neutral, and reverse. I cannot shift into park.

I was mistaken, you can shift into neutral.

Normally the way this was done was to have a mechanical connection from the shift lever to valves in the transmission. Drive would select 3rd gear, 2 would select 2nd, N would deselect, R would select reverse and P would deselect gears and activate the transmission lock.

However, the electronics had solenoid controlled bypass valves that had the ability to override the mechanical valves. This way, in D, although 3 would be selected mechanically, when stopped, the electronics could deselect 3 and select 1 instead. Similarly, if you selected R or down-shifted inappropriately, the electronics could block the shift.

This way, if the electronics/computer crashed or malfunctioned, or otherwise went into limp-home mode (or if the wiring was damaged; or in one case I once looked at, the TCU had been stolen), you could still shift manually.

I know on my car if I turn the car off I don't just lose power steering, I lose all steering, the steering wheel will LOCK. Her car could have been the same way, also this was a keyless car, she couldn't turn the car off.

You should read the rest of this thread and learn the different detents on your ignition switch, plus how to turn off a keyless car by holding down the starter button. ;)

Saw this on CNN over the weekend. My first impression was also "wtf". Then I saw the driver and that it was an SUV... Pieces kinda fit together.

When I went to do my first driving test, the tester got in the car, and when we were about to start, the shifter got "stuck". It was an auto and it wouldn't go for park to drive. I motioned to my driving instructor to come help since he was nearby... Then I realized that I had to be on the brake to shift out of park. No, I did not pass and the bitchy tester gave me attitude throughout the test. Bitch.

Sounds like the accelerator was stuck in this story, but I'm guessing sheer panic affected her ability to shift it into neutral or turn the car off. Button starts, you're apparently suppose to hold it down for a few seconds like a modern computer.
