Daddy's dumping his Acura MDX. What should he replace it with?

The never-ending stream of luxury sport-utes leads my dad to believe that its time to sell our '01 Acura MDX--Edmund's TMV says its worth about $30 grand and my dad doesn't want to sell it for less.

Its not that my dad's unhappy with it--its done everything he's ever wanted and more! The navigation is great and we haven't had a SINGLE issue with it (not one!) So naturally the retuned MDX with 260hp is at the top of his list for a replacement...but there are others to be considered, including:

-- Volvo XC90
-- Volkswagen Touareg V6
-- Infiniti FX35
-- Lexus RX330
-- wait for '04 MDX? (no details yet?)

The Touareg has a HORRIBLE waiting list right now, and its a bit pricier than the Jap models. The Volvo I fear is underpowered in base configuration and the Turbo version is a bit pricey. The Infiniti and Lexus models don't have 7 passenger seating...which we've used more than a few times in the MDX. I told my dad to get a new MDX or wait 6-8 months for a Touareg (it comes out sooner than that, but initial shipments are waiting list only.) During that time, we'll also get to know what's in store for the '04 MDX. What do you guys think?

Seriously, Pom Pom. If it ain't broke....
Well, actually, if you can pay cash/finance a new car every 3 years, I guess why wouldn't you? I haven't seen the Touareg in person, but I really like the MDX. I have a thing against cars with hard-to-pronounce names 😉

Why upgrade to a Radeon 9700/GeForce FX when your GeForce3 still works fine? Like I said, he will probably just get another MDX (with more hp, more refinement etc.)

Well its a bit different comparing video cards costing $300 and cars where that isn't even your monthly payment.

But basically, you have a perfectly fine car that has had no problems whatsoever. You want to take a gamble and get a new car which might turn out to be a lemon, get a car on a new platform that might have hidden problems, etc...

Sure there is the whole upgrade to the latest and greatest and if you can afford it go ahead. But this seems a bit over the top to me.

For a sec there i thought you were callin urself 'daddy'

Don't you take a big depreciation hit with selling a two year old car?

Yes and no. The MDX has one of the highest resale values of any car currently on the market. He'll take a hit, but it's not like buying a ford taurus and losing 50% of it's value the second you drive it off the lot.

Exactly, and like I said its more of a business expense than a personal expense...and he wouldn't be doing this if he couldn't afford it. His budget is roughly $40-$45k max with all taxes etc.

LOL! Depreciates with time != investment...and I doubt he would've gotten very far in business if he didn't know this!

I would either get a new MDX (when is it next scheduled for a redesign not a makeover?), Tourag (blech it's a VW), Infinity FX45 or Hyundai Santa Fe.

Being an 02 MDX owner, I know the 01 has some issues fixed in the 02 and the 02 has some issues fixed in the 03. I don't think a new MDX will come out until 06. but I hear that one will have a 400 HP hybrid engine.

The XC90 T6 is awfully pricey. The regular XC90 is still more expensive than the MDX but unless you are getting it for safety, I don't think its worth it. What's it's performance 0-60 in like 11 seconds? My friend just got a GX470. It is huge but expensive and a gas guzzler. I really wouldn't compare an FX, RX or Touraeg to the MDX. Theyare 5 seaters. Out of the 3, I would probably get the RX330. The Touraeg is nice but expensive. The Interior of the RX is really sweet.
