What few reports I've gotten indicated that, for example, the Philips "Miracle" 642 can't handle DivX 6.0. ..

Your information source is WRONG.

I have the Philips DVD642 and here's my findings (so far) with Divx6:
- Files encoded to divx6, using the "Home Theatre" template (having the new .divx extension) plays 100% fine
- The special new menu/option enabled divx files still play 100% fine...But the player doesn't know how to handle the menuing so it goes directly into playing the movie

So, even though it can't read the new menuing/options of DivX6, it can play the files fine. 🙂

Edit: Detail update, I have the DVP642/37 with Firmware 1109
