I'm sure the dad was thinking something along the lines of "If I wear these shorts I will look like a fool, which will illustrate that she looks like a fool when she wears them."

The joke is on him though, because if his thighs weren't pasty and the rest of his outfit worked with the shorts he would be kinda hot. As it is he just looks disconnected and clueless, like a guy that tells most of a joke but forgets the punchline and just walks off.
