First, why am I posting this? I just feel like talking about it rather than sitting here and worrying...

Today, all the parents in our little group of friends or whatever you want to call it went out to a park, some of their kids went too. It started getting stormy outside with dark clouds, rain, and wind so I gave them a call. I talked to my mom and dad, they both said they were there with excellent weather and a nice breeze with a little bit of rain.

About 20 minutes ago a friend called and said his dad called telling him that my dad was hit by lightning. At this point I call up my brother and he says he'll talk later so I put the phone down. Just a few minutes ago I called up my brother again and asked what happened. He tells me about 2 yards from where my dad and his friend were sitting lightning hit the ground.

My dad's shoulder is what seemed to be in pain and was probably what was hit. His hand turned either blue or white. My brother said white and mom said blue. Anyway, my brother also said that our dad was very scared there, which is probably expected because how often does your hand turn white or blue?

Anyway, no point in going over there myself, they have an ambulance there and by the time I'd get there they'd be gone. My mom and brother say he's fine and he's going to the hospital in any case, but I'm not sure if they're saying that just to keep me calm. All the families that were there are heading over to the hospital, which is where my mom will call from a little later. Depending on what she says I'll head over to the hospital. Right now my mom said I should just stay home and they'll give me call when they learn more.

If some of this didn't make sense or doesn't sound right, I probably just typed it wrong, I'm not exactly feeling normal right now... :(
I was hit by lightning back in 1989. That was one very scary moment.

My right forearm was sore for 3 days. Lightning is one scary biatch.

you can actually get hit by lightning dead on and more than often you live than die...i remember this one guy who lived after being struck by lightning twice and had the scares up and down his back to prove it...luckily becuase of who it has to strike they are "low" voltage strikes...

anway GL to him and i hope he makes it though okay and has no permanent effects...our thoughts are with him

Update: We got back from the hospital a little while ago. My dad still remembers exactly what happened and says that sparks were coming out of his finger tips towards his friend in a steady stream

His friend fell straight back on the ground and my dad just sat down somehow. His hand turned white and most of the parents there ran over. One of them is a nurse so he knew what to do and when someone offered to drive he declined, which was a wise choice, because while it would take a minute or two for the ambulance to get there, on an ambulance they can do half the testing/stabilization on the way to the hospital itself not to mention get there faster.

Anyway, physically the only area he really needs to recover is his right arm, which is what got hit. He can move his hand, make a slight fist, etc.

Oh yeah, we bought a lottery ticket too! :D

I appreciate all the kind comments you guys have, I'll be spending some time with my dad now :)

Pretty freaky allright....I was at my sons soccer games and it was raining...the guy next to me had a bolt of lightening hit his umbrella, luck he was holding onto the wood handle or he would have been toast.

good thing the current path to ground didn't go pass his heart.

ironically it's actually safer for you to be wet, so that most of the current will go around your body and not into it.

he's a lucky man to be hit by lightning, and even luckier to survive.
