I would never buy that car until its resale value holds more steady....You know a car is a depreciating asset, therefore, it's always best to buy a car that depreciates the slowest (even if you have to buy used).

Hope your dad likes it though...

From an investment point of view, you are correct, used is better. But, if you want to have some comfort that the car is not going to cost you any EXTRA than $x, you generally buy new. It might cost you more in the short term, but, it can make budgeting easier...

With the hyundai, for the price of the car, you aren't going to be paying any extra for problems until the car is paid off. (Wear/tear parts not included of course). Once the car is paid off you can probably afford to make repairs on it for a while and get some of your new car investment back.

Not that much to lose IFF you plan to keep it 5+yrs.

Still I'd go another route, but I can appreciate why people choose Hyundai--even with the reputation and resale issues.

He can pay off the car in 5 years (more like 4 years) and still have 5 or 6 years left on warranty.

So other than oil changes, tires and gas, what out of pocket expenses?

I say quite a bit to gain vice not much to lose.

Got a 2002 elantra gls myself. GREAT car for the money.. I test drived the corolla and the Civic as well and the hyundai held up nicely.. My favorite of the 3 was the civic but the price difference was insane (4-5 grand!) when I configured the Civic to match up to the hyundai's feature set (I got an elantra with AC, 4 air bags, cruise control, ABS, automatic, etc. etc. for $11,500)... The corolla didn't compare to either in my opinion.. I've had zero problems with the car (save for a few dealer fixed fit and finish issues) and the engine is shockingly powerful.. One thing to keep in mind with the elantra is the TERRIBLE stock stereo and bland entire - the GT on the other hand has a very snazzy interior and uprgraded stereo.. Good call and enjoy the car!

OMG!

For real.. Some people value amenities more than things like handing and quality though, and Kia and Hyundai trap those people in their web of evil.

Go read the review at road and track and edmonds.com about the Sorento.

I had a Toyota 4 runner that gave me nothing but problems, and the Sorento handles way better.

Wow really? Well the KIA was a 97/98 model, so I don't know when Hyundai over took them, or if they've been the primary owners since the beginning. But that Kia was a genuine POS.

You say that like you don't know the Hyundai is a genuine POS.

obviously you don't know much about cars lately

I know "Hyundai has greatly improved". But it's still a Hyundai, and it's still crap in my mind, and the minds of everyone else.

I hope you know that once "Made in Japan" meant crap.

Oh and I see that you are a mind reader now with generalization.
