Since the affordable FF becoming reality, I haven't been this much excited about new feature/function on DSLR cameras. Now, this movie mode on DSLR...I think it's the market buster. I bet the mass consumers will dig this.
As for me, D90 just doesn't cut it due to its limitations but D300/D3 like cameras with this feature will get me for sure. I don't know how long it'd take for other brands to get it on theirs, but they better be fast.

Update #1:
Here you can grab user sample of the video mode in action.

You don't need godly lenses to show off DOF effects. A 50mm f/1.8 MF lens is only $30 used and does fantastic (I've seen some videos on a Canon Vixia with a Brevis adapter using one).

You just need a fast aperture.

I know I'll be using it with:

Nikkor 35mm f/2 $200
Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 ED $200
Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 ED $500
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 $100
Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 $700

I wish I could afford a D300, or a D700, or a D3. But I can't. So I'm waiting with my credit card for B&H to have the D90 in stock. An MB-D80, spare EN-EL3e batteries, and a pair of 4GB SD cards will be on their way to me shortly.

it didn't interest me either until now.

i have a p&s that does good video, i have a flip video, and i have a canon hd camcorder

they all have the same problem - giant DOF
seeing the dof and focus effects of that d90 changed my mind about movie mode on a dslr

even ignoring the movie mode the D90 looks like a very solid mid-range camera.
Tbh I think that I'm more impressed with this than the 50D but of course we will have to wait for some (relatively) unbiased reviews showing IQ etc.

Thats what I was thinking. My Canon HV20 is great, but as you said the DOF is huge and the noise level at low lights is crap(small sensor). That and I'm stuck with a 6.1 mm - 61 mm focal length zoom lens with my only option is to attach more glass on top of the built-in lens.

read the fine print guys:

*Autofocus is not available when recording movies. Matrix metering is used regardless of the metering method selected.

Yep, even advanced amateur video solutions (e.g. Canon HDV camcorder + Brevis adapter) are manual focus only. Phase-detect AF during movies was out of the question; nobody wants to blank their video feed to AF. And contrast detect would be painfully slow.

Sony and Canon (and even Nikon) will come out with better implementations of DSLR movie mode. Who knows when or how.

advanced amateur video solutions don't record in 5 minute bits either. this is a consumerific movie mode and it's a step in the right direction but color me underwhelmed. most people on their vacation would rather have AF than DoF control, and there is no reason they couldn't have allowed contrast detect AF in movie mode.
