D800 on Feb 7 - looks likely

My wallet is already angry at me

also interesting they discontinued the D300s with no rumor of a replacement yet

36mp will make some happy. makes me wonder if the D4X (assuming they make one) will have even more

I have no idea what camera to buy. The D800 is going to surely be out of my price range but a D700 is a great camera. Then there's the 5D Mark II but the III is surely around the corner. I guess I'll just keep waiting.

Agreed. I love technology and cameras, so new cameras are always interesting.

My big hope here is that the D800 is so awesome that the D700 devalues quickly. Not too likely, I fear, refurbished D200's are still $750 and refurbished D40's are still $420.

The D700 will always be a great camera (regardless of how much better the newer models get).

Confirmed! I got an announcement email from B&H this morning.

Personally I would still get a D700 at a cheaper price. Just depends on your needs though. I don't see a need for 36MP or video unless I had extremely sharp lenses for that many MP. Diffraction might be a problem too.

I hardly view or edit at 100% at 12MP, can't imagine 36MP. I suppose it would be nice for landscape and extremly large prints. But I've seen some huge prints off D700 and honestly I don't think anyone would or could tell what MP they were shot at.

I want. But I don't think I'll bite at MSRP, which is what it will sell for in the foreseeable future.

I bit on a D700 when they dropped to $2200 body only; I think my buy price on the D800 is $2500 body only.

I never would have thought about buying a camera like this until a few months ago. Most everything I'd ever been paid for was magazine sized or smaller, and I'd never done a print bigger than 12x18.

Then I got an email from an art dealer working on a project for a major university. They wanted two of my images, printed 54" wide. Most of the other images they were buying were from MF backs. Mine were 10 MP D200 images, shot in low light several years ago.

I should be at or near the top of B&H's D800E preorder list (firefox plugin was monitoring D800 search results on a 15 second refresh rate)

Where did you get it?
(considering it's not released for retail sale yet.)

Maybe he works for a review site? Or maybe a retailer that has them, but is not allowed to sell them yet?

When I worked at target we would get video games and movies up to two weeks before their release and we would take them home, and then buy them on release day.
