I've heard they run very hot. Some people have told me I should get a HD cooler if im going to purchase one. In your opinion, is it an active cooling solution really necessary?

Yes they run a little on the hot side. If you have room to add a fan to blow over them, do so.

42C over here (60 GB, ball bearing version) but it has a fan blowing right onto it (case temp is about 30C right now)
