D3D or OpenGL?

Ok I'm somewhat new to the nVidia scene, having purchased
my first non-3dfx card 6 weeks ago (GeForce2 MX). I'm
very pleased with this little card. For the price, it
simply rocks. I'm getting an average of 70fps in UT
deathmatch with 5 players, running in D3D. So the other
night I switched over to OpenGL. My fps increased
but there were a few glitches. First of all the game was
pretty dark and the gamma slider had no effect.
Secondly - get this - I had to run a resolution equal to
or higher than my desktop, otherwise my Windows Taskbar
would display in the middle of the game screen. WTF?
Lastly, I was seeing some texture corruption when playing
the CTF Face map. I'm using Detonator 3 ver 6.5 drivers.
My OS is Win98 with DirectX 7.
What mode do you run when playing UT? Is there a fix for
the gamma problem? Are there some settings to get rid of
the texture anomolies?

thanks

<< Which version of UT are you running? Do you know about the Vogel .dll OpenGL yet? >>

I just bought Game of the Year version. I have not applied
any UT patches. Teach me about Vogel.dll 🙂

thx

get the 4.36 patch. Then download the openGL.dll from epictechnology site. It is a special dll that needs to be put in for the regular one (in the systems tap). If you have 256MB or more RAM try the S3TC high res textures. They are awesome! Install them from the second cd and edit your unrealtournament.ini according to epic´s website.

A good way to read about it all is to stop by THE GAMEBASEMENT

just click Ben´s link

Click here for the Vogel OpenGL.dll file. Then you need to make sure you are running version 4.36 of the game(I don't recall if GOTY is 4.32 or 4.36, sorry). When you have 4.36 installed and the OpenGL.dll you modify you UnrealTournament.ini file to look like the one on the page I linked above(well, the OpenGL segment anyway).

The Vogel .dll does three things, one is greatly increases performance on nVidia based boards over D3D, two is fixes the bugs and problems that the default OpenGL.dll UT file has(the only gotcha is you have to run 32bit), and the third and most important part is that it allows you to run the high res textures on the second CD for UT on your GeForce or Radeon based board.

The visual difference is extremely impressive, and from my benching is quite a bit faster then running the default textures under D3D on nVidia based boards(a slight performance drop for Radeons from the last numbers I have seen, but the visual improvements are well worth it).

Some of the older .dll files had problems playing online but the latest patch hasn't given me any issues at all.

Edit- Kinda embarassing, the Basement is down right now😱 Thanks for the props though Rellik😀

oldfart,

Why does your ini file specify RefreshRate=75? Is this particular to your Radeon or must this be set for all cards to work with the Vogel openGL driver? I have a Geforce 256 DDR and thought I could run at my desktop setting of 32-bit colour & 85Hz.

Thanks

and just for anyone who pops their head in here and asks about D3d and the bigass S3TC textures, yes, you can use them with a 5500, you just use D3d, and it runs about as fast as normal D3d, but looks 100% better

Still not nearly as consistent as glide, but it definitely looks better

Robo: thx for the info. always wondered if V5 owners also use the textures...

I just installed the evolva demo and the bump mapping patch. I wanted to do some benchmarking, but it just drops back to the desktop on startup. Anyone have a clue why?

for system specs, see sig. using 3116 drivers. No props whatsoever with all other benches and games.
