I currently have the Corsair H70 hooked up to an i7-920 DO and have been thinking about switching to the Noctua NH-D14. From what I've "read", I should see a bit of a difference in cooling. On minor OCing (3.8ghz), I'm fairly happy with the H70 (low to mid 70's C). When I try to turn up the juice (4.2 ghz), the temps goes higher than I'm comfortable with (low to mid 80's C). Also, I'm a little worried that if the pump fails on the H70, I could do some damage to my system. The NH-D14 can cool with or without the fans. Your thoughts??

FWIW, from Noctua's website:

Is it possible to cool my CPU without a fan (passive) using Noctua coolers?
Noctua coolers weren't originally designed for passive operation although the cooling performance is sufficient in many cases. Unfortunately, it is impossible for us to indicate whether a certain CPU can or cannot be cooled without a fan, as this depends on various factors such as case temperature, case ventilation or the orientation of the socket. Generally, we recommend using a fan in the first instance and then lowering RPM while constantly monitoring the temperature.

How is the noise on the H70? I realize this is a subjective question, but I can hear my case fans now which was not the case with my 212+ and two coolermaster fans. This fact alone (and the $75 sale price from newegg) has made this upgrade worth it to me.

My 4Ghz OC can run under 50 C with all fans off.

I just got an H100 and the fans are more quite than the D14 my little brother has. That said the stock fans are pretty much junk and I'll be replacing both of them at some point. I've got an 10* delta-t on my 3280 which, from what I've read, is about the best you can expect out of water.

I understand that the NH-D14 was not originally made to work passive. What I was saying is that it would do a decent job until I realized that one or both of the fans were faulty. I have a In-Win Dragon Rider case, so I have PLENTY of room and airflow. I can hear the Corsair fans on the H70, but could just change them to Noctua fans or whatever brand I choose to lower the noise level. I originally had 2 Scythe DFS123812H-3000 fans on it. When I turned the RPMs up, they sounded like a loud vacuum cleaner. Maybe I just like to tinker with my computer a little too much... It's the geek in me that thinks it's fun to try pushing it to the limits and make it better.

If you have a sandybridge cpu then you are ok to oc without the fans as long as the oc doesn't get too crazy. The fans on my cpu are quieter than the ones on my case so i don't mind if its there.

I just swapped out my 212+ for a hr-02 macho. The single heat sink on that thing is freaking massive.

I cant believe it looks so huge even though its in my ft-02 case.
With fan blowing upwards? Thermalright does not recommend that orientation for Macho. On some review it was some five degrees worse than the "blows horizontally" mount of regular case.

Silver Arrow should be about the same magnitude as D14, yes? In Ft-02:

HR-02 in mere Fractal R3 is obviously "big" too:
