I'm trying to set up a new gmail account, but when filling in the birthday field, I accidentally put the wrong date, and it is now not letting me create the account due to age requirements.

Is there a time expiration or something on this? I've gone back after a few hours and it still gives me the same age requirement error.

Gmail is a pain in the ass to make new accounts since they force you to send them your cell phone number to send you a pin account now.

Thankfully I made a few extra before they required it.

Only going to get worse now since you need a gmail account for youtube and google+ it looks like.

I know with hotmail it never gets released into the available pool again as far as I know. I had to create an email account for my son to get frequent flier miles. I put his real birthyear in thinking no biggie. Well they needed my email and credit card to give him the OK. I didn't want to do that so I waited like a week thinking they'd just released that email back into the pool and tried to get his address again and it said unavailable. They must keep it in the database or something so it can never be used again. So I had to continue the signon for that email and just pay like .42 for age verifiction for his address.

Wait...is that what you are talking about with wrong year?

Unless this change just happens in the last couple of days this is untrue.

I just created two fresh gmail accounts in the past three weeks and I did not need to give them any kind of phone numbers.

I don't know what I did, but I definitely did not give them any phone numbers . The two accounts were used actively right away too. The first one was to create a G+ for a relative who wanted to join our family group, and the second one is specifically for a friend and I to publish android apps.

Anyway, reading result #2 from your link, it does appear to be a *sometimes*, so a phone number is not always required. Well at least I'm not just imagining things :)

In an effort to protect our users from abuse, we sometimes ask users to verify their identity before they're able to create or sign into accounts. Requiring proof of identification via phone is an effective way to keep spammers from abusing our systems.
