D-Link wireless router problem

QueBert

Lifer
model # is WBR-2310 and here's a break down of the issue:

main box is XP, they've had the router for about a year, but whoever set it up never set up the wireless part. (didn't need it until now) So I logged on it and tried to set it up, started out fine but when it got to the part where it takes 30 seconds to restart, connection drops. Looking at the DSL modem the ethernet light hadwent out. (cables are all hooked up right) I had to fiddle with unplugging/plugging the power cord to get it working again. So I finally got the router configured and decided to start on the laptop. The lappy has Vista, when I try to connect I get the "local only" in the taskbar for connection type, not the limited with the "!" but I'm not sure if Vista does this? I read up and Google told me basically it might be the router doesn't support something related to DHCP that's needed. Just for testing I've tried the router WAP both on and off. No dice either way

of course the crap in Vista that's supposed to troubleshoot and find a solution to problem is saying "uhh I dunno, probably a DNS problem because I can't access microsoft.com" Not telling me anything useful.

was pointed to a tutorial on something to remove from the registry on the Vista box, it wasn't there though. And it seems like if I try to do anything regarding setting up the WAP the router poops out and I have to unplug and mess with it to get it back up and going. I've set up tons of wireless routers and never had much problems, this one is just pissing me off. I'm about to tell him to to buy a different brand but I'll see if anyone here has a suggestion first 🙂

thanks

I have the same router. It works great and has twice the download speeds of my netgear. But here is my probelm. I try and secure the network and I cant access the internet. Didnt matter if I was using xp or vista. Im now trying to determine the replacemnent.
