You bought a cheap one. The DGL-4300/DGL-4100 is a differant animal. It's like buying a Corolla and assuming that all Toyota products are slow and not luxurious.

What pay $15 more to get something that is older; Isn't the DIR655 a 802.11n product? Would you care to rephrase that?

$15 more? The DIR-655 costs $115 and the 4300 costs $80... am I missing something here?

older brother meaning the dir-655 is more dominant than the dgl-4300.

dir-655 has everything the dgl-4300 does with wireless N capabilities. its the newer version of the dgl-4300 pretty much. better bang for the buck in my opinion.

as far as the price goes... frys has it for $105 with a $20 MIR and free shipping making it $95 AR.

I love my 4300... have had it since it first arrived on the market and have NEVER had any problems with it..

Flash to Firmware 1.8 when you get yours..

Torrents, Xbox Live, Game Fuel, Wireless.. everything works just like it should with no problems period.

i've been using the 4300 for couple of years now. couple weeks back they released fireware version 1.8, the worst fireware ever. i get disconnected every 2 hours. went back to 1.7 and problems went away.

another thing i noticed is that my torrents really hate dynamic fragmentation. it's the feature that breaks packets into smaller ones and regroup them.

overall it's a good router.

I'm torn between DGL4300 vs. DIR-655. DIR-655 is newer model, right? Does it have same feature as DGL4300? like gamefuel technology...

I had the 4300 for about a year and a half and I just bought the dir 655... I also bought the matching dlink NIC with it.

The wireless speeds are amazing. 200+ Mbps. Copying files across the network takes minutes instead of hours like it did with the 4300... But...

The QoS on the 655 seems to be a little lacking... I could torrent, my wife could surf on our laptop and I could still play WoW with the 4300. On the 655 my WoW pings have shot way up trying to do this. Also I've had to power cycle the 655 a couple of times. Might still be firmware issues.

I'm thinking of using the 4300 as the router and then hooking up the 655 as the AP. Best of both worlds.

The DGL-4300 uses Ubicom IP3023 processor @ 250MHz with 16Mb memory. The DIR-655 uses the newer IP5160 processor @ 275MHz with 16Mb memory. The wire routing speed of those multi-threaded chips is 5x to 6x that of the Broadcom 5352 used in the popular Buffalo G54 routers.

http://www.ubicom.com/pdfs/whitepapers/IP5K-DWP-CMP-12.pdf

The DIR-655 uses a newer chip that is around 15% faster, but because that product is much newer, its firmware isn't nearly as refined or mature as the DGL-4300. Thus, while the DIR-655 has somewhat better hardware, the DGL-4300 is still the better router (at least, for wired) right now. That may change in six months after the DIR-655 has seen a few more software updates.

The DIR-655 may be memory bound. You need a much larger buffer to support gigabit speeds vs megabit speeds. Yet, D-Link decided to skim on memory by keeping the DIR-655 at 16MB RAM, same as the DGL-4300. This explains why the # connections for the DIR-655 in the smallnetbuilder.com ranking is not that great. Might also explain the less than desirable QoS performance.

Even my $40 Buffalo WHR-G54S has 16MB RAM. I can't believe D-Link thought they could get away with the same 16MB RAM in a $120 router. If you look at all the routers in that price range, like the Linksys WRT350N, Linksys WRT330N, or the Asus WL500GP, they all have 32MB RAM.

Edit: Actually I'm not sure how much RAM is in the Linksys WRT330N. There hasn't been any data posted regarding the hardware of this router, AFAIK. All I know is it's Ubicom based, much like the DIR-655.

However, if your laptop has a draft-N wireless adapter, I would highly recommend spending $25 more to get the DIR-655 instead, which is the successor to the DGL-4300 and is draft-N compliant. With draft-N, you get better speed and range. (In comparison, the DGL-4300 is Super-G with max 108Mbps throughput.) The DIR-655 also has a faster processor (Ubicom IP 5160/5170 vs the IP3023 in the DGL-4300 - for performance comparison, look at the "Overall Performance" table on p4 of this document: http://www.ubicom.com/pdfs/whitepapers/IP5K-DWP-CMP-12.pdf).

D-Link DIR-655 for $119.99 shipped at CircuitCity.com

That looks nice. _One of the CC reviews_ says that it only allows access to 40 web sites??? That can't be right!

CONS: The router has two issues for me. 1) The USB is not for printers or anything useful. Just for storing setup data onto a flash drive.
2) The Website filtering uses 'Whitelist' method to Allow only certain websites (40 total) and Block ALL other websites....not at all good for home use to me. It should use a 'Blacklist' method where you enter a name or keyword to filter (Block) on and ALLOW all others.

Speedtest.net is MUCH improved
