D-Link Wireless Access Point (22 Mbps) w/4-port Router $100 at Best Buy (06/30)

I saw this while looking at the Best Buy Ad online, and the price looked pretty good ($150 - $30 IR - $20 MIR = $100 + tax). Although it doesn't support 802.11a, the WAP does support speeds of 22 Mbps rather than the standard 11 Mbps for 802.11b.

Details of the product can be found on Dlink's site at http://www.dlink.com/products/digitalHome/wireless/11b+/di614+/.

I'm personally waiting for 802.11a to become a little more affordable, but for those who are looking into a WAP, this might be a good choice if you missed out on Amazon's 5-minute $82 deal on the Dlink 713P.

Other deals in the ad that might be worth looking:

1) Imation 50-pack CD-R's $1.99 ($22.99 - $10 MIR - $11 IR)
2) PNY 110-pack CD-R's $2.99 ($39.99 - $17 MIR - $9 MIR - $11 IR)
3) Samsung Internal CD-R/W Drive $29.99 ($89.99 - $30 MIR - $30 MIR) <- Looks like IDE though. CompUSA's free CD-R/W drive w/purchase of 100 CD-R's might be a better deal.

Amazon still shows the D-Link 713 in stock: here

I ordered yesterday, THE REBATE ENDS TODAY...so if you want it, better act quick.

BTW, I ordered the D-Link 711 from Amazon and have it now. It works fine, I've been using it with a Netgear switch I got on closeout at Staples ($25), and have it connecting to a D-Link compact flash adapter plugged into my Ipaq. Set up was easy and it gets good transmisson speeds.

I decided to go with the 713 because, for some reason, after upgrading the bios on the 711 (with the D-Link bios, not the Gemtek one), I lost the Wireless Settings page in the router set-up. I just get an error page saying the page cannot be found, contact tech support. I called them and they were clueless. They said it would be "elevated" and someone would call me back. I won't be holding my breath for that. Sorry to get off on a tangent, but I ordered the 713 to cover myself and will probably send the 711 back to Amazon.

So, hopefully the 713 will perform as well and be less trouble.

IMHO, D-Link makes good stuff. I have some of their switches, plenty of NICs, and just took the bait on their 22mbps WAP and PC card setup for the laptop. I chose 802.11b for the distance. Had heard horror stories of 802.11a having trouble maintaining a full speed link within one entire house, and the lower frequency signal of 802.11b should have better wall penetration. I am prepared to accept degradation when the microwave goes on, but that should be a minor obstacle. Have just received the wireless kit and have not installed to prove this.

Does anyone have experience with this theory?

OT....

Well, I feel kind of stupid, but will pass this along for the benefit of others. It seems that there is no problem with my 711 after all. I was using Netscape 6 to access the router and when I tried IE, all the pages were available. I guess the 711 (and maybe other older D-Link products?) is not fully compatible with Netscape 6. So, if you are trying to set up these products, IE is recommended.

I guess I can cancel my order for the 713 🙂

Good deal, although I do like the option for a Print Server on the 713P. Any rebates on the 714+? I might spring for it if Amazon offers it to me in my Gold Box.

I just picked up the DI-614+ router and the 650+ client tonight from Best Buy. It rocks! I have a great connection and 256 bit encryption enabled with no performance penalty... I have 22Mbps enabled too, but it's hard to tell how fast it is since I'm capped by my cable company. Maybe when I get down to transfering files between systems I'll see the big difference. There has been a slight speed increase with my wireless internet connection. Upgrade your firmware as soon as you get the router. I'm happy so far..

Went to 3 different Best Buys (had them check in system, dude said the other 2 stores I would be going to had em, but the info was only up to date as of 9am this AM) and all were sold out of the 614+. Luckily one of the stores still had a couple of 650+ so I picked one up. HOT! for $50 AR!!!

Arggg!!!!!!!!! Disappearing wireless on my 713P from amazon! No wireless connectivity at all. Tech support said they had seen it before and that it meant the unit was defective.... Seems like a lot of people have this problem. To heck with DLINK

You don't use it just for the internet connection. You also want to do some file sharing once in awhile. And when you're doing that, even the standard 100 mbits isn't fast enough.

By the way dentalboy my cable internet does 1.5 Mbps and @home used to do up to 3 Mbps. Not that thats going to be helped by a 22Mbps router but for file sharing it does make a difference. I do notice a slight increase in speed over my wireless connection to the internet vs. my 713P. The main advantage so far is 256 bit encryption with NO performace hit. Not too many routers / clients doing encryption with no loss of performance.
