I can't figure out what it really is and really does from the marketing on the web site. That's usually not a good sign.

Many of the functions it claims to do are complex and expensive in and of themselves. If it claims to do it all, and on the cheap, I'd be skeptical about how well it does anything.

I am Not familiar with the device but I glanced at the manul.

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dsd150/Manual/dsd150_manual_100.zip

It seems that they took, Software Firewall, Antivirus, etc. and stuck it onto a firmware and a box (kind like a smoothwall+ box).

You need to download periodically update data software. There is screen that is called account and you need to put a credit card number. I.e. after you bought the box you need to pay ongoing fee for updating the software.

It seems that you need to adjust the Firewall and other part similarly to the way you adjust software firewall on a computer. The box works for the whole network but each computer needs its own setting according to its configuration.

From a first look looks to me like it is not going to be very successful (especially Not among enthusiasts).

However, I am not a marketing expert might be that their marketing people know that there is a demand to such a Gizmo.

Ok I got the securespot today as of June 14, 2006 at around 12:30pm. As I held the box I gawked at it for a while thinking how well will this thing work. Shortly after I started to install the D-Link SecureSpot to my internet connection. The SecureSpot goes in between your router and your cable modem. After doing so I power cycled my router, SecureSpot and my cable modem so they would all sync up. After the power cycles I turned on my first computer and after the computer loaded up I poped in the CD to begin the installation process. The installation was very crappy as it just poped up a dialoge box that you could only choose from next, back and exit and there were only eight slides all basically telling you how to physically hook up the SecureSpot. When all eight slides were done you were then redirected to register for the D-Link SecureSpot in order to activate your services on the product and I have done so and it did not require me to enter any credit card information (though they give you a year of subscription based services with the initial purchase of the product). I went through the settings and I setup all the parts that I would of liked to have on and then I encountered a problem where the page states if you want these items blocked make sure they have been checked so I uncheck them all and save it but yet the page refreshes and displays all the items I have unchecked to be rechecked! This fustrated me that I called tech support and they were no help at all as they just stated that if it works it works and no needs to worry about it showing a check mark or not. But eventually after like the 100th time of unchecking and saveing it the check marks were finally gone!

I would have to rate my experience with the initial installation as a 2 out of 5... reasons listed below.

1) No instruction manual included (only on the CD or downloaded off the website)

2) The instructions did not include how to setup through the accounts page because there were many configuration sections I skipped over due to me not knowing you can click on that link (the section where you can turn on and off the services)

3) The manual that you can find on the CD or through download off the D-Link website was so general that it did not explain or tell you what each feature did or did not do.

example: In the Firewall --> Security Settings --> Security Level
The manual did not explain the difference between the disabled, low, medium and high so I had to experiment till I found out what the hell each level did.

The next couple sentences are directly out of the manaul...

Security Settings
The Security Settings page is where you go to configure and modify your firewall and port settings.

Can we say "DOH!" but what the ****** does the security level do and how does it do it?!

4) Since it is a brand new product tech-support did not know very much about it yet alone to tech support it.

5) Some of the settings I tried to apply through the SecureSpot management page would not save correctly and when I tried to access the program I wanted to use it was blocked but could be unblocked with a admin's password but I did not want that screen to pop up at all though I tried to fix it the SecureSpot always reset that specific section (nothing else) to the original defaults.

6) I have tried to run eMule through the SecureSpot and eMule reports that I have a "lowid" to every server I connect to and that is usually associated with the TCP / UDP ports that need to be open so I go to the firewall section and open the ports (on the SecureSpot since the ports are already open on the router) that eMule needs and yet I have not overcome the "lowid" status and I know it's the SecureSpot not letting it through because without the SecureSpot in place I can get a highid which is good for downloading.

The content filter works so well that it prevented me from doing what I wanted to do even though I tried to configure it, the anti virus I have no idea if it will pick up anything yet though I have scanned all of my computers with it and lastly the firewall is still blocking some ports and making it impossible to unblock them.

LONG STORY SHORT!

Good product, great idea... released under developed!

Overall Rating 2 out of 5

Comments - Wait a bit longer for better support before buying the product...

Ok here is my update and I would have to give securespot a 4 out of 5 because they are getting better and better with every new update and the initial firmware was really bad! But now it works really good though they do not have every bug worked out of the system.

Still give them a bit more time to work out the kinkes in the system before buying the product but it seems after a while I will start recommending this product if the product updates keep coming out...
