d-link dwa-140 usb wifi adapter and windows server 2008

My computer had an old pci wireless adapter, but I ditched that when I moved into my new apartment. Unfortunately, I do not have an ethernet port in my apartment. The wireless router is upstairs and I just grab the signal from down here.

I bought a dlink dwa-140 usb adapter at best buy today and much to my chagrin, the adapter did not work with windows server 2008. Installation completed, but whenever I tried to open the Dlink program it would crash...as a result I was never able to 'activate' the adapter in server 2008 even though it appeared under network connections. It appeared as disabled, but enabling it did nothing...windows would say "Enabled," but nonetheless the connection remained disabled.

Anyways, I booted into xp and the adapter works fine. I heard that a windows update for server 2008 fixes the problem with the dlink program crashing, but I can't access updates in server 2008 because I have no internet access without the adapter.

Anyone have any suggestions? Can I look up the update for 2008 on xp and download it, reboot into 2008 and apply it? I tried disabling Data execution prevention before i installed the dlink drivers/programs but it still didn't work. I hope i'm not SOL with the adapter and server 08.

Thank you!

Vista and 2k8 SP2 update would be available for download in the next week or so.

At that time you would able to download it to XP burn a DVD and run it on 2k8.

The same update file for Vista and 2k8 I think about 1.4GB in size.

What is the source of the Internet signal for XP? Can you not do a wired connection to the source for the update?

The other option would be to download the Windows Server SP2 patch then apply it offline. If I were you, I'd use the ISO and and burn a CD to be sure you have it if you need to reinstall.

well...i downloaded sp2 on xp (which is using wireless--the dlink works fine on xp) and ran the .exe on server 2008. I plugged the adapter in and was disappointed when windows couldn't find a driver for it. So i ran the auto install from the dlink disc and got the same error i was getting earlier, before sp2. tried enabling the adapter on network connections; got nothing.

should I just install the driver from the disk and not the dlink software? starting to think that could be the problem...

well... at least using xp again has been fun for the time being
