D-Link DI-714P+

Anyone have or ever used one of these. A friend of mine is looking at possibly getting one and he would like to know a little more about the print server.

I want to know how proprietary D-Link's products are.

Here are some editorials off amazon:

Buy a Linksys router instead! The D-Link product concept is good. A wireless router with a print server built in. I can hard wire my PC for broadband at my desk, as well as use my laptop anywhere in or outside the house . With this set up, I can surf the net with both computers at the same time with one internet connection. The plus is that I can also use the printer with both computers. The problem is that I have been unable to connect to the internet with this router! Tech support is clueless as to the problem. I have spent several days on the phone trying different scenerios without luck.
The concept is great, but the equiptment is useless.
Buy LINKSY, great equiptment, ran flawlessly and great tech support.

However the product has some real "inconvenient" bugs:
* I have never been able to make WEP work with my Lucent wireless card
* The router needs to be rebooted in average once a day, suddenly the wireless network stops working and even the wireless button on the admin interface seems to be gone
* The router won't sync by itself with the time server, needs to be done manually with every reboot.
If you don't need the extra speed, I would recommend going for the 713p. It has been at least 3 months since the last time I had to reset that one.

Doesn't look to be bug free yet.

I couldn't get the D-Link 614+ and the D-Link 624 to connect to my SBC PPPOE DSL connection. My DI-713p worked, but it recently died because of a fubared firmware upgrade. I was never able to get it working perfectly though. It couldn't do any WEP encryption with my DWL-650+ (PCMCIA) and DWL-520+ (PCI) wireless cards so I had to do MAC filtering only. Print jobs were incredibly slow when my brother played Counter-Strike or Starcraft online, and with the newer firmwares, the router would randomly lock up, forcing me to restart it.

I went and got a Linksys BEFW11S4 and it works great. WEP encryptions works perfectly and the router is rock solid. I just ordered a parallel print server from Amazon for about $50 to go with the Linksys.

Linksys, apparently, has horrible tech support, although I haven't had to deal with them yet. D-Link tech support is very nice and eager to help, but it usually seems like they're reading straight from the online FAQ.

The print server on the DI-704P works quite well (4 port 10/100 wired only router with print server). Installing the software on each computer creates a new port called D-Link LPT port in the Add Printer dialogue, and every computer can think that this port as a local parallel port.

Only thing is sometimes there's a slight pause from printing one document to the next compared to having the printer plugged into a computer's parallel. The D-link print server works very well.

I'm currently using DLink DI-714P+ and I love it.

As far as connected devices, I have one desktop which is connected via ethernet, HP Photosmart 1215 which is connected to the Printer Port and one desktop and one laptop, which connect wirelessly. On my desktop I have D-Link 650 wireless card and on my laptop I'm using Cisco Aironet 350. As I have mentioned above, this setup seems to work perfect and I have absolutely no issues with rebooting, disconnecting, etc... Everything works just the way it is suppose to! 🙂
