Microcenter still has the D-Link DI-704P 4 port routers on sale till the end of February. This router has a firewall and printserver built in also. Microcenter is selling it for $39.99 + $5.99 shipping - $20 D-Link Mail in Rebate = $25.98. I ordered mine on Thursday night, and it shipped out on Friday. :D

Anyone know of any issues with this router. ie sending files over AIM or MSN.

Also how is it for gaming? Any lag issues?

I would say that any router may have problems with an IM program. You may have to forward the ports if you have problems. A buddy of mine in the dorms and his roomate share an internet connection with his Linksys router and they have some types of troubles with MSN I think. He said thats fixable. I'm not all too sure though since I don't know all that much about routers, but I have talked to people that use that D-Link router and they say it works fine.

I have D-Link 714P+, which is similar to 704P, just wireless. So far I haven't had any major issues and both AIM and Unreal Tournament work just fine.

Yes. I too have a couple of D-Link routers. I like this one the best. Once in a while I have to unplug it & power cycle it, but not too often (maybe 1x a month). Print server is cool. Keeps the family happy wherever they are computing from. No fights over a particular PC or printer. This is a very nice deal. :)

I have the same router, same version (brown). I assume you're running Win2K or WinXP and are using the D-Link's "recommended" way of controlling the Print Server (i.e. configuring Windows to use LPR printing). Disregard their suggestion and download the "printer driver software" on D-Link's web-site. Windows 2K/XP's LPR printing capabilities doesn't work well w/ the DI-704P (at least not the "Brown" version); however, D-Link's Printer Driver software works like a champ! Once installed, you have a "D-LINK:" printer port that you use.

P.S. To the person who inquired if this router has a serial port: If you can get your hands on the original version of this router (the "brown" version), it has both a SERIAL PORT and a PARALLEL PORT. The serial port is used to connect an EXTERNAL ANALOG MODEM (for dialup sharing). The Parallel port is used for Print Server purposes.

*EDIT* The BROWN version of the router comes in an older style D-Link box and has a picture of the router in a BROWN case. The new version has a picture of the router shown in a Titanium/Silver case. Click here to see a scan of the FRONT COVER of the OLD STYLE BOX.

P.S.S. This is by far the most stable router I've ever used. Works fine w/ IM programs. For direct connection (i.e. peer-to-peer) capabilities of IM programs, you need to open up the required ports and forward such requests to your PC. Very easy to do w/ the web-based configuration.

P.S.S.S. The D-Link DI-604 is a piece of crap of the first order! It's often sold for $10 - $30 AR, but IMO it's not work 1¢.

I have the titanium version of this. love the damn thing. I burnt through a linksys and a netgear before getting this. Firmware upgrades are pretty decent also.

Deepinya: any NAT router has problems with chat file transfer. The firmware upgrade solves the problem with MSN messenger via UPnP, and you can manually open or forward ports for AIM file transfer.

Pros:
Rock solid stability
nice web interface
syslogging (although not to broadcast IP :( )
snmp support, snmp control app can be used instead of web interface
good MAC filtering, solid static dhcp->MAC assignment
DDNS support
UPnP works now
easy firmware upgrading, frequent firmware updates

Cons:
print server suxors a bit, lot of people have complained
DDNS client is buggy with SOME ddns providers
SNMP app seems to respond ONLY to the included snmp software, no generic SNMP MIBs

The SNMP thing really bugged the crap out of me. I run some serious net monitoring stuff out of my home for work network monitoring purposes, I figured I could throw the 704P in with them. No dice though - and Dlink tech support has no idea what SNMP even is. All in all - GREAT router though and for this price Id hands-down reccomend this thing.

I have the old version of the 704P with serial port. It came in handy today when Cox went down for several hours. I have an external dial up modem attached to the serial port of the router and was able to connect to the net using dial up with the router. As others have said the print sever is not very good.

Can one of you who owns this router already walk me thru getting File-sharing on AIM enabled on this router?

I used to have it working, if only with people who don't use routers, but now for some reason its not working and its driving me insane!

thanks

I have 3 computers and I want them all on the net and only mine will be for gaming. Whats DDNS and SNMP about? I have Comcast Cable in NJ....if that helps any.

I just dont want Comcast to know Im using arouter. They assign one ip and dont care to hear any complaints if you use a router. As long as they cant tell and I can game without any lag or ping spikes Id be happy.

LMK bro
Thx

I bought one, thanks.

The rebate link points to a .phtml document, which is confusing. It is actually a PDF. If you download and change the file extension, it will open in Acrobat.

Cool, I'll have to try this. As it is now, I just use printer sharing thru XP because printing was SO slow when hooked up to the printer port on the router.

As it is now, I have an external modem attached to the serial port (no broadband for me -- yet) and it works great.

(I also have the brown version and my damn $30 rebate from BestBuy never showed up. They claimed there was no UPC symbol enclosed. :| Fuxors. :| )

Have any of you that have odered this router recieved it yet? I ordered mine on last Thursday. They sent me an email saying that it has been shipped. They gave me a tracking number so I checked that out and it claims that microcenter made the label and thats it. Fedex claims that they don't even have the package. WTF. I called up Microcenter today, and they don't really know whats going on with it, but they seem to claim that fedex has the package. It seems to me like this place is run my monkeys. I realize that Ohio has had some bad weather lately, but even the dude at Microcenter admited that the weather is now decent and also admited that it should of shipped out.

I'm not sure how to put on one page but if you open rebate link and click
on print, than go to properties and choose (book) you can print on both
sides of one sheet. Thats how I did it.

and thanks Rizzo30. I been looking for one of these.:)

I recieved my router today. I am very shocked after Microcenter and Fedex has no clue of what happened to my package. I was supposed to recieve it yesturday, but waiting one more day won't hurt anyone.
