D-Link: DCS-900 Internet Camera

$40 Rebate

The DCS-900 features a built-in web server which means that you don't need to have a computer to stream video images directly to the Internet. Video images captured by the DCS-900 can be viewed remotely by typing an IP address into a Web browser. With its easy-to-use Webbased interface, the DCS-900 can be managed and configured from anywhere in the world.

Mixed reviews, with most complaints about the optics or the documentation being D-Link router specific. However at $40 it's hard to bead, especially when they are comparing the optics to a $500 AXIS camera.

very tempting, i have been wanting to get at least one (maybe more) network camera's. heard nothing but bad reviews on linksys.....guess this would be a cheap way to get started, and upgrade later if i decide to.

My gripe with the Linksys is you have to pay for their software to run the thing over the web. If it's on the LAN you can view it "free"

This sounds like an uber hot deal.

An alternative would be to get something like WebcamXP (are there any free webcam programs out there???) to be at your IP on a certain port.

THIS would indeed make it a steal.

Unfortuanately you need to send in both 'original' UPC's

But an additonal $20 off would be sweeeeeeeeet~! ;)

I have this camera. You can tilt it manualy, has manual focus and no zoom. The image can be seen as 640/480 or 320/240 in your own browser using activex or java. It has a small utility ipview I think to see the image without the browser. This utility give you the chance to see 4 cameras in the same time on screen if you have 4 of them of course. You can select from no compresion to high compresion in the menu and the fps from 1 fps to 20 fps or auto. I found out that using 320/240 with high compresion and 5 fps it uses the entire 256 kbps uplink that I have and sometimes image will freeze for a few seconds because not enough bandwith. A lower setting than this would be 1 fps that doesn't look so good. In 100 mbps LAN it works perfect. At maximum quality it sends I think 3.5mbps. Image quality is better than other webcam. Nice camera if you have a good internet conection.

Received mine on Friday & set it up today.

It was preconfigured & ready to go right out of the box. I'm using a wireless bridge the Linksys WAP11 which allows me to plug & install this camera anywhere there is an AC outlet.

The picture quality is excellent @ this price point. I'm getting an average 5 fps with bursts up to 15 fps.

Yes it's a little jerky but again, @ this price it's very acceptable.

All in all I'd give this an 8 out of a 10. This does exactly what I wanted it to & does it very easily.

Rebate expires on 10/31/04. ;)

do any of these have a microphone for audio? how might one set up a mini closed circuit monitor with one of these?

(Looking for a cheap way to pipe Sunday Sermons into another room wirelessly for the church baby-sitters)

It seems like the DLink cameras require IE! The demo for the tilt and zoom version doesn't work on my Linux based firefox. I do have the java plugin enabled...

Does anyone recommend a non-IE requiring Internet web cam that displays video?

Hmm... I guess this is an 'indoors only' webcam... anyone know of a good deal on an outdoor/weatherproof webcam?

D-Link has the DCS-900 series IP cameras that you are able to view using IE, or Netscape, PC, MAC, or Linux.

I have not seen any compatibility issues with other make routers. The only issue is that each company uses different "default" LAN IP address. Linksys, for instance uses 192.168.1.x and D-Link uses 192.168.0.x The DCS-900 has a default address of 192.168.0.20, therefore you have to reconfigure the camera to 192.168.1.x address or configure the Linksys router to 192.168.0.x address. I wouldn't call this "incompatible", but some configuration would be required.

Only the DCS-5300 series cameras have a built-in microphone and an A/V out connector so you can plug this straight into your TV.
