YMMV. Here's the deal. Pick up a D-Link AirPlus DI-614+ wireless router at Best Buy currently at $129.99, pricematch the same at CompUSA for $125.26, use a Best Buy 10% off PC peripherals coupon to bring it down to $113.

There are two rebates currently available. The $30 one which prints at the register and can also be found here and expires today 11-27 and a $20 rebate from D-Link found here valid 11-24 to 1-04.

The only snag would be the usual fact that they both request the original UPC. However the times I've had to submit for multiple rebates I've simply written on the photocopy of the UPC cut from the box (usually sent this one for the store rebate) that the original was needed for another rebate and I haven't been denied yet. They both go the same address but use different rebate numbers.

Now $50 on Black Friday. Thanks DarkSanta!

According to the BB Black Friday thread, the following deal will be available this weekend after Thanksgiving:

D-Link DI-614+ 2.4GHz Wireless Access Point
$149.99 - $40 Instant Rebate = $109.99 - $60 MIR = $49.99

I can confirm the BB deal. Got it in a circular in front of me. Limit 1 mail-in rebate per product per customer, no rainchecks, and they're guaranteeing each store will have at least 5. In store only, 6am till noon.

can you guys show me what i have to buy to use the use with this router? i need some cheap solution for 4-5 pcs, on 3 floors w/o running wire from floor to floor (like one wireless access point per floor, then running wires from each floor, or all wireless is better???)

D-Link will be releasing a fireware upgrade this month that is supposed to give their 802.11b+ line a speed boost Text

How do I set this up as an access point rather than a router? I want to use it with the Webramp firewall. Do I just disable the DLink's DHCP and connect it to my current switch with a crossover or is there more to it than that?

Hook,

There might be more to it than that. I have spent about a day here trying to set my 614+ up as an access point. I have a Siemens Speedstream router that sets in my utility closet in the garage where all my network stuff runs to but I want to put the 614+ in the main area of the house to feed wireless to my laptop in the family room and out on the porch. I have connected the WAN of the 614 to the LAN output of the Speedstream and have gotten the internet to work on the laptop but I can't get to the hard drives on the computer that is on the other LAN connections of the Speedstream.

Let me know if you have any luck getting your setup to work or if someone else here has some insight into making this work.

Thanks,
Chris

I may have got it working... What I did was disable the DHCP on the DLink 614, assign it an IP number that was in the same range of my current network (the D-Link LAN address is 192.168.0.1 by default. My current network uses 192.168.123.nnn for its addresses, so I gave the DLink an address starting with the same IP sets).

Next, I plugged the DLink into my network (into a switch that is on my current router/firewall). Rather than using the WAN port on the DLink, use one of the 4 ethernet ports (I used "1"). Use a crossover cable when plugging it in.

After that, I did a "ipconfig /renew" at the DOS prompt (rebooting would probably also do it) and it looks like everything is working (I can get to the internet plus get to the other machines on the home network).

You guys DONT need a crossover to use it as an access point....ALL you do it pluge in a the ethernet cable, regular CAT5 or wahtever into port 1 or whichever you want, and then into one of the LAN ports on your actual router...then run through the wizard, then click on LAN on the HOME tab, and change the LAN address of the router, just change the LAST digit so it does not conflict with your other computers....that is all :).

Actually, I returned my D-Link and got one of the Microsoft kits. But, if I remember right, I did try a standard cable and it din't work for me (maybe your switch/other router has the auto detecting ports?). A crossover plugged into one of the 4 ethernet ports and then into my main router (through a switch) is how I had mine set up. After that, I assigned it an IP that was in my current network to the LAN side. Turn off DHCP and that was pretty much it.

A day? You could have wired your whole house with cat5 in the same time- and saved 98% of the cost! :)

My wife has been extremely happy with the DI-614+/DWL-650+ combo I picked up for her Compaq 710US. Most of our house is already wired for ethernet for the desktops, but whole point of a laptop is portability and lack of wires. She can access the internet from anywhere in the house without having to plug anything in.

For guys that are having trouble using it as an access point, just call DLink's toll free number: 1-877-453-5465 24hrs day/7 days week, very very helpful, even though I think I am a computer master, they were still able to solve my problem...hope this helps!!
