D-Link 704P problems.....

I recently purchased the D-Link DI-704P to hook up my two computers together and to have a print server. One computer uses Windows ME and the other uses Windows 2000. Upon hooking the computers to the switch I was able to share files with no problem. Then I hooked up the print server, and here is where the problems started. I use an HP Photosmart 1215 printer. The computer with Windows ME has no problem using the printer, it prints just fine. The computer with Windows 2000 would not. I went to D-Links FAQ on their support page and found this and followed the instructions. It will still not print. I looked at more FAQ and found a HP printer compatability question, but this is not the issue because the computer with Windows ME prints fine. And now I also get a error message in the computer with Windows 2000 that says " Windows - System Error. The system has detected an IP address conflict with another system on the network. The local interface has been disabled. More details are available in the system event log. Consult your network administrator to resolve the conflict." I do not get this mesage on the computer with Windows ME. And now I can't share files either. If anyone knows a way of resolving this it would be appreciated.

The error message you decribe on your 2000 box indicates that the router (the DI-704P is a router and thus is default setup to use IP address 192.168.0.1 and to be a DHCP server assigning other machines IP addresses) is trying to use that IP address elsewhere. This likely means that your 2000 box has a fixed IP address.

NT/2000/XP loads windows and then sets up the network, so you won't know you've got an IP problem for upto 2 minutes after windows loads.
95/98/Me loads the network before letting you into windows so you instantly know when you have a problem, but may take upto 2 minutes longer to load windows.

If the 2000 box is running ICS, this would cause the problem. Setting up a router with 2 computers on one side, one of which is an ICS host machine is really tricky.

Regardless, to filx the problem you can go a couple of things:
1) Rerun networking setup on the 2000 box and pick an ip address that is not 192.168.0.1 (and not the ip of the print server).
2) Turn of DHCP services on the router, but this may cause the print server to not work and effectively turns your router into a switch.
3) Change the IP address of the router and print server.
