D²OL: ** NEW TEAM MEETING ** D2OL HAS RISEN FROM THE DEAD! **

GeoffS

Lifer
blip... blip... blip.... lub-dub... lub-dub... IT'S ALIVE! 🙂

All of my machines filled except for two that were bone dry and needed a tasks.dat file from one of the other machines.

After a slow, lingering, painful illness, it would appear that has D2OL has finally passed away, quietly and alone. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of Sengent, if at all. Burial will take place in the spring in the company parking lot.

🙁

There... we've mourned long enough.

** THIS IS -=NOT=- TO BE TURNED INTO A RECRUITING THREAD **

You have all been a great group and endured a lot of frustrations. I would love for us to move en-masse to another project, and make the kind of impact we made in D2OL there. I know that many of us feel that we want to have some sort of assurance that we are benefiting mankind in some way, and I don't really want to get into a discussion of how any of the other projects are beneficial to mankind. I personally have had my eye on TSC Childhood Diseases, for which there is already a TeAm set up, with very few current members from what I know, and a *really* big mountain to climb to achieve what we did with D2OL.

I don't see myself as a team leader, and am open to considering other ideas too. Obviously, choosing a project is a personal choice, but I think we all have something in common that drove us to D2OL, and I expect that will influence the types of projects we want to work on. This topic is open to anyone, but is mainly for the ex-participants of D2OL, past and present to figure out what our future is.

I would again ask that people respectfully NOT recruit here.

I would second TSC.
We are all pretty familiar with the client and TRI aren't Sengent <relief>
It shouldn't be long before we get to #1 😀

It shouldn't be long before we get to #1

Not having had the benefit of seeing the stats recently, I'm not sure how big the task is, but I understand from a post in the other thread that it will indeed be a bigger challenge than tipping the cows in D2OL was!

Geoff

I have not written D2ol off yet. The one rig that is uploading is on DSL . I don`t know if it is downloading. My rigs on dialup are doing neither. Does this indicate a DNS problem ? Sengent has handled the situation badly of course, this is nothing new. What is happening on your rigs ? I know some of you are uploading. What about downloading ? I would like to check the stats on TSC but I cant get to them.

I've uploaded but can't download.
TSC are reorganising at the moment and don't expect to be back online until tomorrow.
Unfortunately, after 16 months running D²OL, I have just about written it off.
Server outages every weekend, no support (except from someone who doesn't even work there any more) have brought me to the end of my tether 🙁

The move for TSC is supposed to be finished tomorrow evening. They are moving all their stuff from Sengent to their own servers in Connecticut. I tried installing the client, but couldn't communicate to their server to get a node number.

After having uploaded most of my work (I think), I turn one on every now and then to see if it's going to pull work down. So far, no work has been pulled down, and using the change-the-tasks-file trick hasn't worked either, indicating that communication with the candidate server is not happening at all. I think what you are seeing in the stats is perhaps people whose machines haven't completely flushed. I'd be surprised if tomorrow's numbers are anywhere near as high as today's, assuming nothing changes.

If the project does come back up before a collective agreement is made, I would also be willing to stay on... if only to see if 1 million breaks the stats! 😀

I look forward watching you guys climb upward. The rate you shot up in D2OL was just astounding!

Best of luck to all D20L'ers!

I used to do DF and that one was great because they had a client for virtually every OS. In addition, client ran in console so I could just telnet into some boxes that I didnt have regular physical access to in order to run the client.

It would be a cool project to get into but I havent looked at the project in almost a year now so I have no clue how it's going for the team right now. I think the DF team is ranked 5th right now, and Ars Technica has about 3 times as many structures completed so it would be quite a push to reach the top.

TSC sounds cool but if the client is limited to just windows and mac I think that that should be considered a mark against it, as Im sure many people, besides myself, have *nix boxes waiting to crunch.

Personally, anything other than D2OL sounds good to me at this point so Ill go with whatever.

I am sitting on about 500 completed WU . My dinosaurs are still crunching. Would have had 600 but my best cruncher died, bad caps on the motherboard. Maybe it is an omen.

I will put my oar in here and say good luck to you guys in whatever project you choose. I look forward to seeing you rising up the ranks 🙂

Confused

DeezWho: According to the TRI download page here, in addition to the Win platforms, and MacOS, Solaris and Linux also have clients, so I think you would be good to go there!

ken008: I haven't written them off yet either, but it's not looking good at the moment 🙁

confused & m0ti: thanks for the encouragement! Tipping the cows was a rush (okay... a cyber-rush that I wouldn't even bother trying to explain to my wife!), and I think it would be a blast to be part of something like that again! 🙂

As Geoff stated, it seems D2OL has gone by the wayside. Can recieve any candidates, even with the "trick". Good luck to you
guys in whatever you decide to work on. We are also looking at TSC but testing some other projects too.

I hope tha the D2OL project isn't dead and comes back to life, but no word from Sengents yet...🙁

I only have a couple of systems left running D2OL, but let me know where to move em, and they'll go. I pretty much have no preference, as long as they're not sitting around doing nothing....

Sorry to hear that the project crapped out before you guys made your goal of 1 million 🙁

Good luck with whatever project you choose 🙂

I join all my D2OL teammates in mourning the passing of this project. I was glad to have been a part or it. even though i only managed to get i a little over 600 candidates in a 2 week time. I hope TSC doesnt drop the ball because i am biting at the bit to hop onboard with Geoff for another uphil climb to another great [TA] triumpth to benefit humanity. And moreover, this is better than just humanity in general. Its for children 😀 *tries to not recruit 😛 * I hope everything goes smoothly in TSC's transition. I am having the same problem Geoff is at this time. Install, then when i go to register i cant communicate. Hopefully the server move will clear all this up. As far as leading team [TA]. Who is doing it as of right now? I cannot tell since i can't get into the stats page. I think Geoff should ask to take over given his determination and thuroughness (is that even a word? 😛 ) in the D2OL project. The project alone makes it worth while but Geoff made it easy to understand and fun.

I second what Confused said. 🙂

Good luck guys. 😎

I am dumping! I dialed in with a different phone number ( different city ) And it is working upload only. I think this proves the DNS change is not fully implemented. If any of you are having trouble uploading try a different phone number if you are on dialup. If you are on cable or DSL try dialup. I am happy to be rid of these things. My stats should skyrocket might be fun to watch.

Nice! I believe most of mine have uploaded. Downloading is still not happening. I don't understand the DNS issues... if TSC only moved their stuff to CT, and Sengent left their stuff in FL, why are there DNS issues involved with getting Sengent back up and running? Naturally, the total lack of communication is not helped by the fact that Ken W now draws a paycheck from TRI...

Good luck guys. 😎

I 3rd what Confused said. 🙂

The D2OL TeAm is the best TeAm going right now...whatever project you guys move over too...you will let TA rise and dominate in that as well!!

If this is the end for D2OL thanks and congratulations to all who participated with Team AnandTech. I haven't run it for a while but I remember the run to #1. It was spectacular show of team loyalty and leadership from many TA members.

😀 😀 😀 for finishing on top.

I uploaded an extra 160 or so last night. Haven't shown up in the stats. It's now Wednesday morning and I'm still not able to download 🙁
