Cyrix 5x86 with Seti??

I currently have a Linux box with a Cyrix 5x86 100 and 64 megs of ram running seti. With the 3.0 client it took 108 hrs to process a client. I haven't checked the time for 3.03 but I think it's at least 200 hours.

I set up a Linux router for a friend which is the same setup but only 32 megs of ram. With version 2.4 of the client, it was quite a bit slower than my cyrix machine. Now, with the 3.03 client, I'm sure it would take several hundred hours to complete a work unit.

If I run it on this machine, will I get credit for the work units or is the 300 or so hours simply too long for them to accept?

At that rate, it would turn in 29 WU per year 🙂

By the way, the reason it took so much longer for the 2.4 client on the machine with only 32 megs of ram was because it was constantly swapping to the hard drive.

...and no, I won't be putting more ram in the machine.........!

I'm sure they'd accept the result.

You'd be much more efficient running RC5 on a computer that slow though.

According to the TA speed page, the Cyrix 5x86 is only slightly slower than a Pentium per MHz at RC5, so that's not too bad. 🙂

You may be able to trade the Cyrixes RC5 power for some Pentiums to run SETI for you instead & get lower cpu times 🙂
(just to clarify what the others said)
