I had 5 avi files on this cd for a backup and tried to put it back on my hardrive, four of the 5 would go on with the last giving me this CRC error. I have already researched the topic knowing that there is really nothing you can do, but my problem is that i can't even delete the file of my computer and whenever i try to it ends up slowing up my whole computer dramatically. Basically my question is does anybody know how to delete the file???

What version of your OS? If you're using Win 98, you can do it from the DOS prompt. More when you reply.

AVI files can be pretty big, which would explain why trying to delete one could take awhile. Three suggestions:

1. The file properties may be marked as Hidden and/or System. If so, change the properties so the file is neither of these.

2. Boot to Safe Mode, and try to delete the file.

3. Empty your Recycle Bin. Then, see if you can cut and paste the file you want to delete to the Recycle Bin. Then, empty the Recycle Bin.

Hope that helps. :)

thanks for the advice, however it didn't work. When i tried to view the properties of the file the computer would freeze, cut and paste- an error would pop up saying that the file is in use, safe mode said the same thing.

Did you also try to view the file properties in Safe Mode? If so, and it won't let you even view them, I'm pretty much out of ideas.

Do you have any utilities like Norton System Works, etc? If so, try running some diagnostics. This is too weird. Could it be a virus?

Another idea. Go to the manufacturer's site for your hard drive, and download thier diagnostic tools. It may be able to determine if some part of your drive has become corrupted.

BTW -- This exactly why backup is so important. I use two identical drives, and I Ghost my drive regularly. I also Ghost before making any major change, such as installing a new program. Ghost even works with XP without any reactivation if you use matching drives.

many times a CRC error is a result of a hard drive slowly dying.

In addition to Harvey's advice, I suggest you do a disk error check. It might be a bad surface sector on the hard drive that's causing the problem. I don't believe the hard drive is dying, though the best way to assess that is by running the HD diagnostic tools and stressing the HD through Sandra. How are your other programs running?

yep and occasionally a bios issue with your motherboard, check to make sure you have the most current bios for your mobo,

had the exact same problem with my msi kt4vl last year. bios flash fixed me right up.

thanx a lot everybody- well i finally got it deleted using Harvey's first set of advice about clicking the properties of the file, the problem with that though was I had to wait about 20 minutes for thing to actually come up, afterwards i just compressed the file, that took another 20, then presto bad file was capable of being deleted.
