Exactly. TiVo. Our power tends, when it does have a problem, to go on and off several times in a few seconds and then the problem is over, but it's enough to make the TiVo start to reset. And TiVo starting from scratch can be a long process. Also my husband's desktop is less than 230W.

Brown outs and blackouts. You only need a few seconds to shut down the computer. Battery backups are better than any surge-only device.

And, as I've said in another thread, your modern dual core PCs tend to draw less than 100 watts and idle closer to 65.

Limit of 10 per rebate, paid via a Visa check card.
 
Would this be good for plugging my router, my pc, and my monitor into? I don't need it to run on battery alone for any extended period of time, just enough to handle power flickering off and on on occasion.

Depends on the amount of power your PC uses, if it's an off-the-shelf system (Dell, HP, etc) then it'll probably work OK for said purposes. If you have a CRT instead of an LCD it'd likely be pretty limited run-time, but even then would probably still work.

For another $20 or so you can usually find one with slightly more power and likely a USB connection for XP/VISTA to monitor and auto-shutdown if power gets too low. For example, Costco's has had a refurb'd 550VA APC unit for sale @ $39.95 OTD.

You could plug your computer and router into it, but maybe not the monitor. Then again, it may be fine with even a big LCD.

I bought two. I might go and buy another one for an Xmas present for somebody

I don't really need to it to run for more than 60 seconds on battery at all.(Probably not even half that) The power in my house just somewhat flickers sometimes(lights dim and stuff) and it causes my router to shut off and turn back on on occasion.(Main reason I want this is for the router) I just figure I might as well plug my pc into it too.

How does the ups the thread is about compare to this one?

I have read that the cheap UPS do not protect the pc from voltage fluctuation. Can anyone clarify any of this for me? I know next to nothing about these things. The one I buy will be my first one.

Yup my Quad with 8 gigs and an 8800gtx draws a hair less than 200w at idle, so for blips it'd be just fine if you're on a budget.

Might want to buy one UPS for the computer, and one for the monitor and router.

Not this one. You need to be looking for the "AVR" (automatic voltage regulation) units for that feature.

My overclocked E7200 system consumes less than 40W from the wall at idle and less than 90W at load. I currently have it on a 350VA/200W UPS.
 
my E8400 overclocked to 4.25Ghz + 9800GX2 overclocked 700/1750/100 running dual GPU2 folding@home only cunsumes 140W according to kill-a-watt
 
Just ordered 5 used a 30$/150 coupon and added a 59cent pack of paper clips. Total price per unit was 15.60 after rebate.

Kill-A-Watts are cool aren't they!

Just keep in mind it will draw a lot more when not idle. A few people have posted that their 9800gx2s use about 180 watts at peak. Load up a game and check your power usage then. My guess is that your power will go up to about 300W when running a game.
