Some apps I use are really buggy on CM 10.1. Thinking about reverting my HD+ to stock and just using a custom launcher.

Yeah that's the thing, now that they've gone commercial the expectations go up. You can release buggy software as a custom ROM maker, but it's way different as an actual company.

I finally read it all and the links. Freaking wow is what I have to say. Loss of root, loss on non-Google approved features? CM is dead or will be dead as a multi-device ROM.

It seems to me from that reading the source is the main CM guys getting so upset MIUI used them as a base and made some other company millions.

They want their payday, and they are willing to lie and ruin CM to get it. Which would be fair if it was just their baby but its bigger than them.

i think these two portions from xplodwild's post summarize everything

Root access is planned to be COMPLETELY removed by default, and to be downloaded in a separate package. Users don’t use root anyway, they say. All of this because of a future CyanogenMod Phone, which has to pass CTS to get Google Apps officially. Want some exotic features? Too bad. You won’t get them if Google don’t. Wasn’t that the point of CyanogenMod originally? Derp.

The most ironical thing? If they want to dual-license, it is to make non-open changes to the apps. So, we’ll need CyanogenMod for the CyanogenMod Phone, because the code shipping on the device won’t match the public code.

the point of Cyanogenmod is that it was community-driven (with certain people calling shots) to make improvements and offer features that no one else had... once you get too big, you have to abide by rules (i.e. Google not wanting CM to package Gapps together, but was still fine with an end-user flashing CM and then Gapps)

and now, they want to be bigger, and need to abide by more rules (no default root for the CyanogenMod phone, need to abide by NDAs and proprietary stuff)

sigh...

Just curious, which apps?

I've had no problems with any apps on the HD+ with CM10.1, in fact, it's far better than the stock B&N ROM which IMO sucks.

Not really sure what will change since they've gone commercial? What does that even mean, practically speaking? that they'll start to charge for updates or something?

I think so. PA is the new CyanogenMod, IMHO. They're great, listen to their user base on a lot of things, and everything they do seems to be pretty stable out of the gate. I kinda like PAC ROMs, which are a combination of PA, AOKP, and CM, but I haven't tried one since getting my Nexus 4. I thought they were kinda laggy on my Galaxy Nexus, though.

The biggest gripe I have with PA is the PIE colors. They have linked them to the Statusbar Icon colors, so to change PIE colors you have to have the statusbar icons the same color. That makes zero sense IMO, and they haven't really given a decent reason yet, except "we want to." But they are doing this for free, so I can't really complain, and the stability and general awesomeness of the rest of the ROM makes that one nit-pick easy to forgive. I can't use anything without the per-app DPI now because things look huge at normal resolution. lol

well, fork PA and create your own build where PIE colors != linked to the status bar.... and if your code is clean, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't pull your changes back to PA mainline

Hey... if they can find a way to automatically install CyanogenMod with an app from the Play Store, I wish them the best of luck. I doubt that it will ever work as well as they want it to on most phones, though.

Once I saw what a pain in the ass it would be to install it on my old Droid X (thanks to it's locked bootloader), I decided that it wasn't worth the hassle.

The reason I haven't looked into doing that is I thought their hybrid properties app was closed source, and I assume that's where the changes would have to be made. Am I wrong? I hope so, cause I'd definitely like to try that.

hmmm... need to take a look at it... maybe the open source variant is good enough to tweak? I bought their paid PA-prefs app to play around a few months ago, maybe time to dig through for more info

This is like dudes that say bands sold out because they got paid finally.

Everyone wants to get paid.

Everyone here now didn't pay a dime for their work.

Holy moly, I never had a droid until I bought my 10 year old a Nook HD for his 11th birthday.

The process was simple. If you have an old phone (esp in the Android market), update it.

I did the whole process in less than 30 minutes.

I think that your missing how CM is put together and what it's based on, and the alternatives.

The process is usually easy, and as you said, well worth doing on an older device. However the method for doing it varies massively from device to device. It's going to be interesting to see if they can get out one tool that's going to work across multiple devices without making a load of bricks.

This could be great for them in the long run, or it could be a disaster.

As pointed out, the bugginess and bad battery life of some versions are acceptable on free software, but the certainly won't be appreciated on commercial software.

Follow the money. It always works this way.

A lot of aspiring developers are all about open source (notice that most of the OSS crowd are kids) but once they have a hit that is able to make them a living or more, they soon change their tune.

This happens in the music industry too. Garage bands are glad to give their music away, as long as someone listens.

//owns an Oppo Find 5

The official ROM has been buggy, text spelling problems, bad battery life...

And the original official rom (that came with the phone during March release) was EOL'd in July, and the new official Rom(ColorROM) came out with its own set of bugs

Sigh..... Been sticking with cm builds... The find5 hardware is decent, but lacking in stable firmware... Maybe having official cm support is a good thing for the n1

Edit: ColorROM forum for bugs. A lot of them because of bad coding, bad qa... Sigh - if you can't make a solid replacement for Android apps, then use the default app... No point in a shiny replacement if it is buggy

In my case it was the Kindle app and the National Geographic app. Kindle works in 10.1, but has been busted in 10.2. Supposedly the latest dailies fixed the issue, but I tried and it didn't work. National Geographic doesn't work with either version.
