This makes me a little nervous but honestly if they go anti-community someone else will take up the mantle.

They seem like an entitled bunch. Koush going bananas over Chromecast was the limit for me.

the CM maintainer of my phone (Oppo Find 5) has been complaining for a while about some of their actions... some of it could just be politics

not sure what the full story is, maybe you could browse that thread and read it

I think for the most part they're OK. Koush is just ridiculous though. I'm not even sure why they made Voice+ because that was just so hacky and horribly implemented. Fusion Messenger did all that in a much better manner too.

You are probably right. For some, unknown reason, I see Koush as the face to CM.
They also do not have the chops for this. Maybe they do, what do I know. But all their past stuff seems naive in scope, despite their awesome accomplishments.

Yeah, I dunno. I was very impressed with CM in the CM 6, 7, 9, and somewhat 10 days. Following 10.1, I started noticing they're less willing to work with users and their focus has shifted.

In the past 6 months I haven't seen much out of the CM team. Voice+? Focal? I don't know. None of them are great, and even if Focal becomes a finished product, it's almost trying too hard. People just needed a camera that's easy to use yet with features, not one with 500 icons that I need to long press on to figure out which icon is which. The most recent derp of the power widget toggles is disappointing too.

Not really sure where they're going, and honestly I've been more impressed with PA's more recent features like PIE and Halo more than the CM features.

That's pretty much my feelings on this as well.
I didn't mean to sound that bitter. I wish them the best, but I can't be a part of it. It simply doesn't appeal to me.

Because he's the biggest jerk involved? :what:

I've long felt that the main advantage of CM was as a base for individual devs to port new AOSP stuff to old/heavily skinned devices. Would never consider running it on a Nexus.

Yeah, I wish them the best, and currently my Moto Milestone, Nexus S, GS2, Nexus 4, HP TouchPad, and Nexus 10 are all on CM, but we'll see if that still stays true. I've already converted to a hybrid PA+CM ROM on my Nexus 4.

I'm hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst :(

With the movement towards Google Edition phones CM doesn't have the same place in the community. Now you no longer need CM to get away from OEM skins.

It's not just to get away from OEM skins. There are AOSP ROMs out there. By that I meant pure AOSP.

CyanogenMod to me offers AOSP and also additional features that Google missed out on implementing. To me, CM is adding the polish that I feel like is missing from AOSP. There's a good deal more they can be doing, and right now it seems that a combination of CM, PA, and AOKP provides a very solid AOSP package that beats the hell out of most OEM packages.

I agree 100% with that. I use a AOKP rom because of the things it adds (many from CM) like ribbons, better quick toggles, use of SD card for the camera, etc. I put a GE Rom on my S4 for like an hour before I thought "man, this thing is really bare."

Honestly, Halo is great. Unfortunately, it looks like the official build of PA is dead for the VZW SGS3

Yeah, that's how I feel about this too.

It can go so very wrong but fortunately there are projects like AOKP, PA and Liquidsmooth that I can go to.

How do you do that? I thought as of 10.2 you don't have that option anymore?

You know how users are always whining about fragmentation on Android?

Well, this is real fragmentation. Whether it makes an impact depends on how many users stick with CM. This can be good if it competes with vanilla Android from Google and if CM's competing services/built-in apps are developed at a more rapid pace.

of course in a CyanogenMod thread, some Android user HAS to bring up Apple right?

The thing about fragmentation has been beaten to death already. Even if you're in complete denial, the evidence speaks for itself.

I consider fragmentation as "incompatibility" of apps due to SDK changes (like you can't run some apps on Froyo anymore)

these custom roms are on the same SDK levels as the AOSP, and should be passing the same CTS tests... so they aren't contributing to fragmentation (stuff like Halo on ParanoidAndroid might break stuff though)
http://source.android.com/compatibility/cts-intro.html

and keep in mind, these are CUSTOM roms, that require root and/or recovery to install..... if the user has CM on their device, they can load the latest version of CM (if there is a maintainer) to "de-fragment" their device
