Cyanogen Mod worth it

Hey everyone,

I've recently switched to an android phone in hopes to open my eyes to another platform other than iOS.

I've been a long time supporter of jailbreaking iOS devices - and now see that for the most part androids are fine right out of the box.

Would it be worthwhile to install CM? if so what benefits would it provide.

Thank you in advance

Yeah it'll be worthwhile to install any custom ROM to be honest

They have themes like iOS did
Kernels for UV and OC etc
getting newer OS which aren't officially supported(CM7 brought the D1 all the way to 2.3.7 even though they officially stopped at 2.2 I believe.)

CM was actually a good deal more stable than the stock ROM on my Evo 4G. Now that I'm on a Galaxy Nexus I still run CM10 rather than stock Jelly Bean simply for all the added features.

Yes certainly. I had a thunderbolt which I broke...and I inherited an old Droid Incredible from someone for free. The DINC is certainly getting long in the tooth now...but before I switched my service to it I unlocked/rooted it and installed CM7. I cannot believe how well it runs! It is dead stable and quite quick and smooth for such an "old" phone. It honestly seems to run better than my thunderbolt ever did.

CM 9 is light years better than the OS that shipped on my S2 I9100. So many more options, more stability, lighter/better memory usage, and much easier to use, better battery life too. I wouldn't own another android phone without flashing CM to it i like it that much.

I like CM on older devices that's not supposed to run recent version of Android. CM was all about giving older devices new life and improving the current ones. That was the initial spirit and reason for Cyanogen Mod and I think older and manufacturer abandoned devices benefit the most. I love CM9 on my Touchpad and Captivate. Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 are stock and will remain stock as long as Google actively supports it.

I've found CM much worse than stock on my SGS2. I've installed the Jkay mod and frozen a bunch of stuff with titanium and now I have great options and a battery life of >24 hours with about 4.5 hours of screen time.

I ran CM9 for a while but I'm actually running NexusMod 5.0.4 for my Skyrocket right now - pretty similar but the battery life was never that great with CM9, whereas with this ROM it's flat out amazing (better than stock all around).

That said, they're still waiting to iron out some camera issues with CM10 (Jelly Bean) so as soon as that progresses a little further, I'll probably try that out. They just released Alpha 1 for the Skyrocket 2 nights ago so I'm not in any rush, especially with work taking my on the road soon...I like to have a fully-functioning phone. :p

The SGS2 was a very tough device to develop for because no other device used the Exynos SOC. It didn't have a Nexus device to help it out either. Luckily, the Note and SGS3 also use the Exynos SOC, so a lot of the work that was put into the i9100 was easily ported to the Note and SGS3.

JKay mod is cool and I wish some of those tweaks like adding double tap support to CM9 would work.

However, I'm not a fan of TouchWiz, and while it's usable I find it to be a burden.

You're right though. CyanogenMod is definitely not something "usable" unless its on a Nexus device.

I noticed for my Motorola Milestone, CM7 just ate up so much RAM in general it was unusable until the dev added quite a few memory tweaks, but this didn't happen til summer 2012. I had to use CM6 for the time being.

CM9 on the SGS2 had many issues. The camera wasn't fully working til March or so, and auto brightness issues made it difficult to use until being resolved in June. There's still problems like BLN not working unless it causes a wakelock, etc.

My Nexus S lacks torch on CM9. I don't even know why the hell they can't figure that out.

I'm ok with working with a phone that's getting constantly updated, but trust me there are times when I just want it to work fully, and CM will always be a work in progress. I do completely understand when ppl make fun of me for not being able to make calls yesterday because my phone was in a bootloop or because I missed a bunch of texts while flashing my phone, or losing a bunch of data. I deal with it, but at the same time I wish I didn't have to.

I just put CM9 on my SGS2 AT&T version (i777). I think it's the best OS version I've put on it yet, and I've been going through quite a few of them trying to find something that covered all my concerns. All the advanced features baked into CM9 are great, and so far the battery life has been better than other ICS roms I've tried.
