CV Joints?

I get a 'knock' noise coming from the front (maybe right) wheel area whenever:

a) Stopped, then putting it into reverse, going back a bit, then into drive again
b) Stopped at a stoplight, then accelerating

Thoughts? :(

From what you describe, as far as when the sounds are happening, it sounds more like a transmission. Could just be the way the sounds are reflecting that makes you think it's coming from a wheel.

To rule out a CV joint, get under the car and look at the boots that surround them. If you see any tears or grease on the boots, then it could be them.

Is it a constant "knock" noise? And does the noise turn into a grinding noise whenever you make a turn? Try physically inspecting the boots themselves to see if they've been torn. If yes to all of these, then I'd say problebly it's the cv joints, if not it could be something else.

The boots aren't torn and I can't see grease on the joints. There is no grinding noise in turns.

However, when you turn the wheel all the way to the right and rotate it back and forth a bit, it makes a kind of 'rubbing' noise (but not really rubbing)...kinda like a stretchy kind of noise?

You've probably got some time left. I drove my old 89 Accord 5 speed with clicking CV joints for about 5k miles before I finally got sick of listening to the clicking and replaced them.:)

Granted, I knew what the trouble was from the beginning, so I was pretty gentle with the tranny/clutch during this time.

CV joints usually make noise in turns. With my old VW Rabbit I could even tell you which one it was by the noise it made and the direction I was turning at the time. Some CV joints can last a long while from the time you hear a noise but not always. I drove a car once that had one grenade for no good reason at all. It had never made any noise till it died. It actually split several of the steel balls in half which is something I have never heard of or seen since.

Might want to take a look at motor mounts too or inner cv joints. Typical CV joint noises when outer joints are involved is a clicking noise on hard left or right turns.

OK, so it's most likely that it's the inner joints? There's no clicking in turns no matter how hard I try ;) ... what about the steering thing?
