Helping a friend find his first job and I have to say his CV formatting is pretty bad.

Anyone got any good examples of what a great first job CV would look like? He has some basic experience with one internship but nothing I'd call concrete work.

Several of the job sites I posted my resume at back when I was looking mentioned not to use any advanced layout features (like tables, etc.). Apparently resumes are often just processed into text or even just copy and pasted into an HR system. Something to consider when working on the layout anyway.

Did he or you go to college?
Your college career center should have a resume style guide you can follow.
It might even be available online.

It all depends on the job field and exactly what is on the resume.

For example, if you're a bit older and you have basic office skills and a nice work history, it wouldn't make much sense to put education first because it may have been a decade or more since you've been in school. If all you have are the basic required skills then it doesn't make much sense to put that first because a first impression from a potential employer is that you are a dime a dozen.

In this situation it sounds like education should come first and foremost. If you are a student, then it should go without saying that you've been spending your time focusing on your studies instead of focusing on trying to mantain a non-professional job while in school. If your work experience is very limited, then you probably want to put that last... so it would be Education >> Skills >> Work Experience.

PM me a copy of it and I will help.

We both went to college, unfortunately he lives in a different country (hes originally from Macedonia.

Injury: thanks for the tips I'll pass it on to him.

Anyone else? I'm really looking for a good CV layout. I've gone through about 1000+ CVs and some just seem to stand out to me even though the job skills where a total mismatch to the people I was hiring. I remember rereading those about 3-4 times just because of the layout, unfortunately I junked them just after I hired the people I wanted.
