David, after reading your first post, I hope you run out of makeup and have to cut. :p

Most of the time teenagers who do it are attention whoring. My little sister tried to use it as a threat once. "I'm starting to hurt myself because you of now!" yeah, because my parents are forcing her to cut herself. She hasn't actually done it though. My parents actually believed her and stopped what they were doing to go give her the attention she wanted for 5 minutes.

Absolutely fvcking ridiculous.

I'm thinking Mommy! Daddy! do what I want!! is the main reason people do this sh!t.

Everyone gets depressed and wants to kill themselves at some point, that is just life, but why in the world would you want to just sit there and inflict pain upon yourself. I'm sorry, but that is just....stupid.

Aren't there cutters that do it in privacy, and they try to hide it from people? I don't think they are all attention whores.

I always thought they did it to cover emotional pain with physical pain. Sort of like when you hurt your foot so someone punches you in the arm to distract you from it.

I used to burn myself, but I kept it a secret as well I could. No one found out until my girlfriend saw me with my shirt off a few years later. Boy, that was fun to explain.

I took care of an idiot the other day doing the "conditional suicidal" crap, "If you don't do xxx, I'm going to kill myself"

Doc ordered some sedatives He refused claiming "I don't like shots" -I pointed out the multiple fresh scars on his forearms & where we'd stitched the fool up last week & asked him how in the world he could not like shots when he did stuff like that to himself...

I have very little patience for these fools, they're just Darwin award candidates waiting to happen...

You should take your own advice :|

What's with the "Mental illness: losers or fvcktards" thread thing atm? First it was depression, now this? If you don't understand something, USE GOOGLE - how difficult is that? You're going to find that it's a very real issue for a lot of people, just like diabetes, cancer or whatever else... Asking ATOT is a waste of time as you get retarded responses from people with no clue (as quoted above).

So your sister wasn't cutting herself, just threatening to? And that makes the majority of people who actually do it without broadcasting it to the world attention whores?

I cut myself, but not the wanna-be suicide type of cutting. If I get a deep sliver, or a wart or something I sterilize a knife or razor blade and take care of it. CBA to go to the doctor every time something like that happens.

*Raises hand*

Not me. I have never given thought to killing myself, nor can I say that I've experienced real depression.

Consider your statement not proved.

can't get anyone else to cut them, so they do it themselves?
Or perhaps they are practicing for self surgery?

"cutting" is actually usually not a suicidal gesture.

Many who cut have disassociative personality disorders, they cut to help themselves feel "real" or to release pain.

I knew a couple of guys in high school that would burn thier hands with cigarettes. I don't know if it was to see who was toughest, or if they were just whack.

On second thought, they were fvcking whack

How about the idea that some people due to early trauma develop maladpative coping
skills as a way to survive ?

That works for some, but the stupid thing covers a wider audience. ;)

I cut "Fvck You" into my arm when I was 11 years old. I was half pissed off and half thought it would look thuggish.

Thank god it wasn't that deep... I only have the letters F and U still there (11 years later). After the first few letters it must have been too painful to cut it deep :p

It was around the time they had some lame thing at school going around they called the "sissy test". You scratched your arm till you bled and whoever had the biggest scab was the most manly. I thought I'd take it a step further

QFT. I've dealt with depression and had no urge to do this... but then my IQ isn't low.

Cutting is not a mental illness .... its a cry for help for emotionaly unstable people. Some people can't deal with emotions, the feeling of hopelessness or being hurt emotionaly by others, so they resort to dulling out that pain with physical means. Cutting is attractive to those people b/c they can control the pain, make it go away or have it come back at a time of thier choosing. its a control issue if anything else.

Cutting is not a mental illness per say .... but it can develop into one, where one would resort to cutting them self vs dealing with a problem.

I agree with geekbabe, its usually not a sign of suicide.

It also comes from the other direction, wherein the individuals have suffered such emotional abuse and are so numb to feelings that cutting themselves is the only way they CAN feel anything.

that reminds me, when my mom made me go to ccd (sunday school), a girl in my class came in with blood seeping through her shirt. she carved some satanic stuff into herself

and kids did the sissy test in my jr high too. used an eraser and erase teh skin on the back of your hand, definitely left scars.
