Cutting Edge AMD System... Advice?

Here is what I am thinking about putting together for my new system:

Asus A7V8X motherboard - 155$
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ - 100$
2x Samsung PC3200 DDR400 256MB sticks - 98$ a peice
ATI Radeon 9700 PRO video card - ~ 350$

and I'll use older stuff that I have for everything else:

Antron 400 watt PS, WD 120 7200 8meg, 80GB IBM 120GXP, Hercules GameTheater XP, M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496... etc etc


What do you guys think? Any advice on the new components I'm looking at? I don't think it's a bad deal. I'm buying everything with an AMEX for potential price matching :0

Maybe wanna go with just one 512MB stick on the DDR? Better for overclocking, so I hear.... (supposing you intend or want the ability to do so)

The xp2000 is not cutting edge. if you want a palomino XP, buy the newegg 1600+ for $51 and make the FSB 166, then you will have instant XP2100+ , otherwise get the newer 2200+ (rev B) or higher

I was having a lot of trouble finding a 2200+. Why is a 2200+ so much better than the 2000+ - is it a diff. type of chip?



Otherwise, I think it's pretty solid.

A) The 2200+ is a different type of chip (Thorouhbred based on .13 micron process)
B) The Revision B chip is whats being used in the 2400+ and 2600+ chips (doubt it's on the market yet, due to the 2200+ not being a huge mover, so the inventory in most places should be the older Revision A chips)

I would get the XP 1600+ and overclock that puppy, mines at 1827mhz (174x10.5) 100% stable.

Maybe instead of the Samsung get urself some Corsair CAS2 DDR 400mhz Ram, that stuff is nice.

I'm with the others... pick up a top-end Corsair 512Mb DIMM. For one thing, it will take less power than a pair of 256Mb modules, leaving more for your other goodies

I was under the impression that the Corsair isn't able to hit CAS2 or something like that, which the Samsung will be able to do as it's specced to 3200 instead of 2700?
