Cutting back on alcoholic beverages

While I am working out I am looking to shed a few pounds, hopefully from mid section. I am wondering if reducing my alcohol consumption will give me results. I used to go out 3-5 times a week, cutting it back to just weekends and will keep it to just a few drinks (I like crown and water) unlike the old metalmat that would get sloshed.

Besides that my diet is pretty good. Fruits and Vegetables as snacks, whole grains, chicken and fish for protein, no sodas, etc.... and I dont really eat junk food. I am on the road quite a bit and try to stick to subway. FYI I am a little over 6'1" and 183 lbs last I checked.

Absolutely. Look up how many calories are in those drinks, if you're trying to lose weight they are absolutely counter-productive. Note however that there are studies showing that moderate consumption of alcohol are actually good for your heart (by increasing HDL). Right now I am doing the Starting Strength routine, but I do cardio on my off days.

All other things being equal, yes, reducing alcohol intake will contribute towards a caloric deficit. And as long as you are burning more calories than you are consuming you will be losing weight.

I started eating healthier and working out over the past couple months, and at the same time vastly cut back on alcohol consumption, but for me it was mainly because of the effects that being hungover would have on my productivity and quality of life during weekends. Monday would come along and I'd think, where did the weekend go? I had been sleeping them all away, and it also encouraged me to smoke cigarettes and eat crap food. I still drink when I go out but I take it easy and haven't gotten drunk at all, and am still able to have a good time. I guess the binge drinking from college is finally over.

Definitely a good idea.

My bingeing days are pretty much behind me, although the odd weekend I will get a bit drunk. For the most part, I will cap at 3-4 drinks over the course of an evening, which is enough to enjoy myself and have a slight buzz.

My weight has been very consistent for months now despite some variability in my diet (dessert here and there; dinner at my parents place, overeating at Christmas, etc.). Somehow I manage to regain equilibrium by altering my diet, and I have been within a 2-3 pound range for quite a while.

I plan to abstain after St. Patrick's Day until I race a marathon in May, which should hopefully drop a couple more pounds and get me closer to race weight.

Considering that alcohol consumption interferes with recovery, you should notice a different in how long it takes to stop being sore. Alcohol has a lot of cons while lifting so keeping it to a minimum is advised.
