I'm glad he/she's gonna be alright :^)

You can blame this on the US Mint. Once it cost too much to make pennies out of copper like they should be, they should have dropped them altogether.

<sigh>
We had to put down one of our cats last Friday. He was almost 14.

He'd been in a nasty cat fight and the first-aid I could offer here at home wasn't near enough. He got a nasty infection and abcess the size of an apple on his head...then half his face "fell off." (all this happened within a week of us finding the injuries)

We took him to the vet who said he'd end up needing several surgeries at a cost of $2000-$3000, and no guarantees that any of that would totally fix the problem.

We opted to have my old friend put to sleep.

You have to look at the positives. Your little kitty is going to be okay! Didn't you take this cat from another member of AT? And fuck the helping people ideas. Cats and dogs are a much better cause.

Yeah, she was found on Geekbabe's porch :) She's a lovely little rascal though. Hopefully this'll make her feel better - she's moving with me in a few weeks when I move to the North End.

"He'd been in a nasty cat fight...."

Shall I assume you're one of those animal abusers who don't believe in keeping cats indoors where they should be?

it's an animal. AN-NI-MAL. you people seem to forget that. god forbid the thing be forced to brave the wilds of suburbia for a few hours a day. contrary to your anthropomorphizing beliefs, the cat is not happiest when it is pampered with couch cushions, bottled water, and cat food that costs more than a steak.

what about exotic feline pets, like lions and tigers? isn't it a borderline sin to keep them captive, even if it's a really nice pen?

Yay for kitty.

I don't understand how people can be so callous about animals. Those damn animal shelter commercials are 100x worse (at least) than the African children commercials where they have huge potbellies.

I'm glad your kitty is recovering from surgery. Don't let those who said that the amount of money was too much bother you. You can't put a price on friendship or life.

You are a kind, decent and wonderful man, I'm so glad the cat found a home with you!

Hope she feels better soon and I cannot imagine what in earth caused her to eat a penny?

The cat is extremely fortunate to have found a home with Matt. Her other owners didn't even bother to look for her.

OK, some comments. First, the total vet bill will be $4500 now. Second, I have pet insurance (VPI) so hopefully some of that will be covered. Finally, she has these issues because she has a penny in her small intestine, and the zinc from it is affecting her liver. They'll remove the penny, and she should hopefully make a full recovery.

Ouch. :(

Good luck!!

Good to hear. Knowing she ate a penny there has to be a joke in there somewhere to bring some humor into this :)

Thanks Geekbabe. Me neither, who knows! =(

Dogs and cats will eat the strangest things. One of our beagles ate some linoleum from our kitchen floor so we ended up having to have an operation to get it out of her stomach, then about 4 months later she repeated the stunt and had to have another operation. At that point we accelerated our plans to have the floor redone and had ceramic tile put in. She hasn't figured out how to eat that so far.
